Abstract: The spectroscopy method involves feeding light from a stimulation light source (1) via a first optical fibre (2) to a fibre coupler (3) and from there via a second optical fibre (4) to a specimen (6). Fluorescent light emitted from particles in the specimen are fed via the second optical fibre back to the coupler and from there via a third optical fibre (8) to a detector (10). Alternatively, the light from the source can be fed to the specimen via a first optical fibre and fluorescent light from particles in the specimen passed via a second fibre to a detector, whereby the ends of the fibres facing the specimen are oriented w.r.t. each other so that emitted stimulation light passes to a specimen region from which fluorescent light will be detected.

Abstract: The number and size of free resin particles, which give rise to problems in the manufacture of paper, are determined so that said particles may be bound to the wood fibres by the addition of auxiliaries in order to neutralize them. Following preparation of a paper pulp suspension, the resin particles are separated therefrom, marked with a fluorescent die and isolated. The light signals emitted by the individual resin particles after excitation are detected to enable the number and size of the particles to be determined.

Abstract: Method for the continuous preparation of beta -carotene solubilisates by brief heating of beta -carotene together with an emulsifier until solution takes place, rapid cooling of the homogeneous solution to below 100 DEG C by addition of water and subsequent adjustment of the required final concentrations of beta -carotene, which is characterised in that a suspension, which has been preheated to 20 to 80 DEG C, of 1 to 40% by weight beta -carotene in an emulsifier is pumped through a heating coil located in a heat-transfer oil, where the temperature in the solubilisation mixture is 120 to 180 DEG C and the residence time is 10 to 300 seconds, and the homogeneous solution is turbulently mixed in a mixing chamber with such quantities of water at 10 to 80 DEG C that a solubilisate containing 0.5 to 6% by weight beta -carotene is produced and is, where appropriate, further diluted to the required final concentration.
