Abstract: 1. A process for preparing an ester of acrylic or methacrylic acid with a hydroxyl-containing organic compound, which comprises esterifying a saturated polyester which contains no fewer than 2 free hydroxyl groups per molecule and may contain ether groups or a saturated polyether which contains no fewer than 2 free hydroxyl groups per molecule, this polyester or polyether having an average molecular weight ~Mn of from 400 to 4,000, with from 100 to 150 mol %, based on the OH groups of the polyester or polyether, of acrylic acid or methacrylic acid in the presence of an acidic esterification catalyst and one or more hydrocarbons forming an azeotropic mixture with water and a small amount of a polymerization inhibitor at elevated temperature with azeotropic removal of the resulting water, after the esterification removing the hydrocarbon by distillation and after neutralization of the esterification catalyst reacting the remaining acrylic or methacrylic acid with an amount, equivalent to the acid number, of an epoxy compound having no fewer than two epoxy groups per molecule until an acid number =

Abstract: The invention concerns a method of preparing mixtures of alkali-metal salts of polyaspartic acids and alkali-metal salts of acylated polyaspartic acids by a) hydrolytically cleaving peptide bonds of polyaspartimides and/or polyaspartic acids with aqueous alkali-metal bases, a molar excess of at least one alkali-metal base being used per mole of aspartimide and/or aspartic acid units and b) reacting, in aqueous solution at pH values of 6 and over, the hydrolysis products with carboxylic acid chlorides, diketenes, carboxylic acid esters or caboxylic acid anhydrides or polymers which contain polymerized anhydride and/or ester groups. The invention also concerns the use of such mixtures as additives to phosphate-free and phosphate-reduced washing and cleaning agents.

Abstract: The invention provides aqueous solutions or dispersions of copolymers obtained by copolymerising (a) 20 to 95 mol.% of at least one monoethylenically unsaturated C4-C12 dicarboxylic acid or its anhydride; (b) 5 to 80 mol.% of at least one branched chain oligomer or polymer with a vinyl, vinylidene or alkylvinylene end group made up of at least 9 C atoms; and (c) 0 to 50 mol.% of at least another monoethylenically unsaturated compound capable of being polymerised with monomers (a) and (b). These aqueous solutions or dispersions contain 0.5 to 70 % by weight of these copolymers in relation to their total weight. They are useful as leather auxiliary and pigment dispersing agents.
