    Abstract: Graft copolymers obtainable by free radical-initiated copolymerization of (A) a monomer mixture comprising (a) a monoethylenically unsaturated C4- to C8-dicarboxylic acid, or an anhydride, alkali metal salt or ammonium salt thereof, (b) a monoethylenically unsaturated C3- to C10-carboxylic acid, or an alkali metal salt or ammonium salt thereof, (c) if desired another monoethylenically unsaturated monomer which can be copolymerized with monomer (a) and (b), and (d) a monomer containing two or more ethylenically unsaturated, non-conjugated double bonds in the molecule, in the presence of (B) a monosaccharide, oligosaccharide, polysaccharide, oxidatively, hydrolytically or enzymatically degraded polysaccharide, oxidized, hydrolytically or enzymatically degraded polysaccharide, or chemically modified monosaccharide, oligosaccharide or polysaccharide, in the weight ratio (A):(B) of (95 to 20):(5 to 80), a process for the preparation of the graft copolymers, and detergents and cleaners containing the graft copolymers in amounts of from 0.1 to 20% by weight, are described.

    Abstract: Water-sol. copolymer (A) having K value 15-120 (measured by the method of Fikentscher on an aq. soln. of 1 wt.% Na salt at 25 deg.C and pH 7) comprises (mole.%) (a) 99.5-80% at least one monoethylenically unsatd. 3-6C monocarboxylic acid (I); (b) 0.5-20% at least one comonomer (II) with at least 2 ethylenic unsatd. but non-conjugated double bonds and (c) 0-30% other, copolymerisable, water-sol., monoethylenically unsatd. monomers (III). The copolymer consists of segments derived from (I) and (III) of mol. wt. not over 15,000, bonded together by (II) units. (II) are esters prepd. from (1) a (I) and (2) a polyhydric 2-6C alcohol; water-sol. or -insol. polyalkylene glycol of mol. wt. up to 400; water-sol. polyalkylene glycol of mol. wt. over 400-10,000; polyglycerols of mol. wt. up to 2000; polyvinyl alcohols of mol. wt. up to 10,000, and monovalent monoethylenically unsatd. 3-6C alcohols. Specifically, the acid component of (II) is (meth) acrylic acid; crotonic acid, vinylacetic acid and/or methacrylic anhydride, and the (I) segments are of mol. wt. 300-8000.
