X = carboxylic acid or nitrile function. Cpds. of formula (I) are new except when R = 1-3C alkyl and A = chemical bond.

(II) are esters prepd. from (1) a (I) and (2) a polyhydric 2-6C alcohol; water-sol. or -insol. polyalkylene glycol of mol. wt. up to 400; water-sol. polyalkylene glycol of mol. wt. over 400-10,000; polyglycerols of mol. wt. up to 2000; polyvinyl alcohols of mol. wt. up to 10,000, and monovalent monoethylenically unsatd. 3-6C alcohols. Specifically, the acid component of (II) is (meth) acrylic acid; crotonic acid, vinylacetic acid and/or methacrylic anhydride, and the (I) segments are of mol. wt. 300-8000.
