    Abstract: A method and apparatus for generating high current, negative ion beams is described. A plasma source of ions of one charge polarity includes an accelerator for accelerating the ions toward a target having a plurality of apertures. An electric field directs the ions exiting the apertures against a target surface which is arranged to emit ions of an opposite polarity. The electric field directs the opposite polarity ions away from the target forming a stream of oppositely charged ions. In the drawing the ions produced in the plasma chamber 10 are accelerated toward the apertured grid 12 by field 8 and pass through the aligned apertures in the grid 12 and target 16. A field established between apertured grid 18 and target 16 reverses the general direction of the ion beams so that they bombard the back surface of the target. Ions of the opposite polarity are emitted from the back of the target and are accelerated away from the target by the field between the grid 18 and the target. The opposite polarity ions exit as streams through the apertures in the grid 18.

    Abstract: The invention relates to a process for generating heat and hydrogen by reacting a passivating oxide forming solid state material and water under the control of a passivating oxide preventing agent forming thereby an oxide reaction product, heat and hydrogen. The oxide reaction product is then electrolytically or thermo chemically reduced to recover the solid state material. Aluminium is hydrolized in the presence of gallium producing aluminium oxide, heat and hydrogen. The aluminium oxide is in turn electrolyzed back to aluminum.

    Abstract: Luminous energy is very efficiently converted into heat by a substrate coated with an antireflective layer, whose surface is structured. In this arrangement, the refractive index and the thickness of the layer and the surface quality are such that as little energy as possible is reradiated. The structure of the layer surface results in multiple reflections of the light falling on the radiation collector. The substrate preferably consists of tungsten and is provided with a layer of tungsten oxide. The surface structure of the layer is a micro-hill structure or a dendritic structure.

    Abstract: Optical elements, and methods for fabricating them, are described wherein each element includes a free standing (self supporting) polycrystalline continuous thin film of diamond (101) combined with a non-hydrogenated amorphous diamond like carbon (DLC) film having a high percentage of sp bonding (104). These elements may be designed to have optically smooth surfaces, have wide optical transmission ranges (for example, be transparent across the infrared portion of the spectrum), and exhibit exceptional durability characteristics. Optical instruments that include such elements are also described, along with the derivative benefits, such as improved operating performance and lower maintenance requirements, realized using the novel optical elements. In particular, a polarization Michaelson interferometer (PMI) is taught which is operative over the entire range from far infrared into the visible portion of the spectrum without requiring the exchange of beam splitters or beam polarizers. These performance benefits are achieved as a result of the transmission characteristics of the novel optical elements associated with the PMI.
