    Abstract: In a process for producing n-butyraldehyde and/or n-butanol, (a) 1,3-butadiene is reacted with an alcohol having the formula ROH, in which the residue R stands for a non-substituted C2-C20-alkyl or alkenyl group that may also be substituted by 1 or 2 C1-C10-alkoxy or hydroxy groups, a C6-C10-aryl or C7-C11-aralkyl group or the methyl group, at a higher temperature and pressure in the presence of a Brönsted acid or in the presence of a compound of an element from groups IB, VIIb or VIIIb of the periodic table of elements with phosphoric or nitrogenated ligands, so as to produce a mixture of addition compounds having the formulas (II) and (III); (b) the addition compound III is isomerised into the addition compound II; (c) the addition compound II is isomerised in the presence of a homogeneous or heterogeneous transition metal element catalyst in liquid phase or in the presence of a heterogeneous transition metal element-containing catalyst in gaseous phase, so as to produce an enol ether having the formula (IV); and (d) n-butyraldehyde and/or n-butanol are generated by reacting said enol ether IV with hydrogen and water or with water in the presence of a homogeneous or heterogeneous transition metal element catalyst in the liquid phase or in the presence of a heterogeneous transition metal element-containing catalyst in the gaseous phase. The alcohol ROH released is recycled into the partial reaction (a).

    Abstract: The invention relates to a method for producing 1,6-hexanediol and 6- hydroxycaproic acid or their esters by the catalytic hydrogenation of adipic acid, adipic acid monoesters or adipic acid diesters or educt flow s containing adipic acid or its esters as essential constituents. The bottom product obtained when the hydrogenation discharge is distilled after the hexanediol and the hydroxycaproic acid or its esters have been separated off is reintroduced into the hydrogenation process, said bottom product essentially containing oligomeric esters of the 6-hydroxycaproic acid. The resulting mixture of the educt and the return flo w is reacted at temperatures of 100 to 300 .degree.C and at pressures of 10 to 300 bar in the liquid phase and with a molar ratio of carboxyl grou ps to be hydrogenated to hydrogen in the reactor of 1:5 to 1:100, on hydrogenating catalysts.

    Abstract: The invention relates to a process for the preparation of 1,6 hexane diol fr om a carboxylic acid mixture containing adipic acid, 6-hydroxy caproic acid and, in small quantities, 1,4 cyclohexane diols. Said mixture is obtained as a by-product of the oxidation of cyclohexane into cyclohexanone/ cyclohexanol by water extraction of the reaction mixture. Said process involves esterification of the acids and hydrogenation. According to this process (a) the monocarboxylic acids an d the dicarboxylic acids contained in the aqueous dicarboxylic acid mixture are reacted with a low-molecular alcohol to form the corresponding carboxylic acid esters; (b) the excess alcohol and low-boiling agents of the resultant esterification mixture are released in a first distillation stage; (c) separating into an ester fraction substantially free of 1,4 cyclohexane diols and a fraction containing at least the greater part of the 1,4 cyclohexane diols is carried out from the bottom product in a second distillation stage; (d) the ester fraction substantially free of 1,4 cyclohexane diols is catalytically hydrogenated; and (e) in a pure distillation stage 1,6 hexane diol is extracted from the hydrogenated discharge in a known manner.
