Abstract: A reflective spatial light modulator array is described incorporating liquid crystal devices, mirrors, a semiconductor substrate, electrical circuits, and a reflector/absorber layer for blocking light. The invention overcomes the problem of shielding light from semiconductor devices, high optical throughput and contrast, pixel storage capacitance to hold the voltage across the liquid crystal device and precise control of the liquid crystal device thickness without spacers obscuring the mirrors.

Abstract: A pulse of energy including atomic, thermal or electromagnetic radiation produced by a source such as an electron or atomic beam, laser, electrical or optical means is applied to a generator. The generator includes a body of material adapted for acoustic vibration. An energy absorbing layer is in intimate acoustic contact with the body of material so that acoustic vibrations generated in the absorbing layer are transmitted to the body of material. The surface of the absorbing layer opposite to the body of material is acoustically clamped in position by a solid clamping medium.

Abstract: A method for high resolution maskless electroplating is described. Preferential plating results from exposing those regions where enhanced plating is sought to a collimated energy beam. Such exposure can produce an enhancement in the plating rate of 103, which is sufficient to eliminate the necessity of masking the surface.

Abstract: A method for high resolution maskless chemical and electrochemical machining is described. Preferential etching results from exposing those regions where machining is sought to an energy beam. Such exposures can increase the ething rate in the case of electrochemical machining by a factor of 103 to 104. Such enhancement is sufficient to make masking unnecessary.

Abstract: A selective electroplating process involves placing a cathode and an anode in a non-photo decomposable electrolyte, directing a focusable beam of energy of intensity 102-106 W/cm2 onto the cathode surface to heat the regions to be plated, and establishing an electrical potential between the cathode and the anode. Also claimed is a similar process which employs a light beam of intensity \-102W/cm2 for heating the cathode surface. The process is esp. useful for personalising the repairing integrated circuits, but is also useful e.g. in video display techniques. Deposition rates of about 103 times greater on the heated regions than on the background can be achieved.
