    Abstract: The invention provides methods and apparatus for correcting spectral measurements, such as are obtained by a spectrophotometer for measuring color. A single matrix is used that operates on a raw measurement vector (spectrum) to obtain a corrected spectrum. The matrix may embody a transform that minimizes the difference between the corrected spectra and a set of reference spectra. The difference may be characterized by a set of basis function weighting vectors which are then used to build the correction matrix. Correction of high resolution spectra (very long measurement vectors) is thereby allowed, without the large number of measurements that would normally be required. The reference spectra can be calibration data, or measurements made by another instrument which is desired to be simulated.

    Abstract: A method is provided for measuring the color of irregular surface materials, including textiles which may provide dissimilar color measurements from different viewing angles, by illuminating a sampling area of the irregular surface material approximately perpendicularly thereto and measuring the color reflected from that area at a substantial angle, preferably about 45 degrees, with a plurality of separate photodetectors arrayed circularly around the illuminated sampling area of irregular surface material to receive the reflected illumination from substantially opposing directions and at a substantial angle to the illuminated area, for providing a more accurate yet lower cost color measurement system for textiles that can be used easily, quickly, and uncritically in terms of the handling, positioning and orientation of the textile material being tested.

    Abstract: An improved and lower cost color spectrophotometer, especially suitable for on-line color printer color control systems, incorporating a low cost commercial imaging chip, which normally only forms part of a three row, three color, document imaging bar used for imaging documents in scanners, digital copiers, or multifunction products, having multiple photo-sites with at least three different color filters in three rows. This multiple photo-sites chip may be modified to also provide unfiltered photo-sites. This spectrophotometer may have a substantially reduced number of different LED or other spectral illumination sources, one of which may be for white light, yet provide multiple spectral data outputs from the differently filtered photo-sites being simultaneous illuminated by the light reflected from a color test target area which is being sequentially illuminated by the respective limited number of LEDs, enabling broad spectrum information and color control.

    Abstract: A system for automatically re-calibrating a spectrophotometer which is mounted at one side of the printed sheets output path of a color printer for measuring the colors printed on colored test patches on printed test sheets moving thereby as the test patches are sequentially illuminated with multiple different color illumination sources, which illumination colors are reflected from the test patches and detected by a photosensor providing electrical output signals. Re-calibration is provided by illuminating, with the same sequenced illumination sources, during a time coinciding with an adjacent gap between the printed sheets moving in the output path, a stationary calibration test patch which is mounted on the opposite side of the output path from the spectrophotometer, to provide respective calibration signals from respective electrical output signals of the photosensor during a time interval when a printed color sheet is not in said output path in between the spectrophotometer and the calibration test patch. This re-calibration timing may be provided by the existing sheets positions tracking control system of the printer. The calibration test patch may be a standard white tile test surface, and may be mounted slightly outside of the output path to avoid contamination.

    Abstract: Optical characteristic measuring systems and methods such as for determining the color or other optical characteristics of teeth are disclosed. Perimeter receiver fiber optics are spaced apart from a source fiber optic and receive light from the surface of the object/tooth being measured. Translucency, fluorescence, gloss and/or surface texture data also may be obtained. Audio feedback may be provided to guide operator use of the system. The probe may have a removable or shielded tip for contamination prevention. A method of producing dental prostheses based on measured data also is disclosed. Measured data also may be stored and/or organized as part of a patient data base.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for determining the condition of a test subject based on color uses a color measuring instrument to detect change in a color factor indicative of a condition such as a disease, spoilage, ageing, etc. A medical condition such as bilirubinemia that affects skin color can be detected. One measures color factors such as Hunter b and L in the subjects' skin color. For predetermined ranges of one color factor, in particular L, changes in the other color factor, e.g. Hunter b, above predetermined levels are indicative of the medical condition. In many cases, a single measurement of the color factors can be utilized as a warning of the likelihood of the medical or contaminated condition, if the ordinary range of the color factor is known for healthy individuals with skin coloration like that of the test subject. Even if there has been no baseline measurement and the test subject's color is such that a single reading of one or two color factors will not warn of the possible presence of the medical condition or contamination, sequential readings can indicate the presence or absence of the condition based upon changes in the measured color factor, or lack of changes. The color measuring techniques apply to a wide range of biological test subjects (e.g. hair, teeth, tissue, excretions, foods, soil, animals, plants). Methods and apparatus for determining accurate hair color classifications and appropriate coloring agents to bring about a selected change of color include a table of hair color classifications, a color measuring instrument to arrive at Hunter L, a and b for use in identifying a particular classification from the table and a database that identifies appropriate coloring agents based on a selection of coloring actions from a menu and the classifications of hair color.
