Abstract:
An ink regulating device that measures color in a web-fed rotary printing machine for printing a printing material web or sheets in a plurality of colors. The ink regulating device measures and evaluates the colors black, cyan, magenta, and yellow, and after general calibration (i.e., the recording of standard values), derives set values for the inking zone setting devices, without requiring any further patterns, and without the need for a special copy when the printing pattern is changed.
Abstract:
A spectrophotometer measures the color properties of a sample by illuminating the sample with a light source. One or more light beams are sensed by an active pixel diode array where each of the beams are sensed by a different array of diodes in the active pixel sensor. Each of the diode arrays are formed on the same substrate by a CMOS process such that each diode array is automatically aligned to each other during formation. Subsequent mechanical alignment is, thus, eliminated.

A method of detecting the color of an article such as gambling chips to permit the different color chips to be sorted. The method comprises sensing the color of the article at a plurality of places thereon by moving the article relative to color sensing means and integrating the color measured with respect to time.
Abstract:
A spectrophotometer which is highly manufacturable at minimum cost nevertheless provides precision of measurement of spectra components of light which is projected therein by maintaining precise optical alignment of optical and electrical components thereof. These components are mounted in a module which is contained in a housing having an entrance aperture which defines an object area for light the spectrum of which is measured by a photodetector in the module at an image area. The module has a base plate provided by a printed circuit board on which a closed wall encompasses an area (a corral) on one side of the circuit board. The wall is a one piece structure which extends to the vicinity of the edge of the board. It is assembled with the board as a unitary structure so that the assembly is made torsionally rigid and resists bending in the plane of the board. The module may be of sufficiently small size so as to be located in a housing which is hand held, thereby providing a hand-held spectrophotometer.

Apparatus for color measurements according to the C.I.E. system comprises a first fiber optic cable for receiving and linearizing light from a light source, a lens system for spectrally displaying the linearized light and focusing the light on one end of a trifurcated fiber optic assembly that integrates and separates the light according to the three C.I.E. tristimulus functions. The separated light is received by three photodiodes and electronically evaluated to determine the magnitude of the light corresponding to the tristimulus functions. The fiber optic assembly is made by forming, at one end, a bundle of optic fibers to match the contours of one of the tristimulus functions, encapsulating that bundle, adding a second bundle that, together with the first bundle, will match the contours of the first plus one other tristimulus function, encapsulating that second bundle, then adding a third bundle which together with the first and second bundles, has contours matching the sum of all three tristimulus functions. At the other end of the assembly the three bundles are separated and aligned with their respective photodiodes.
Abstract:
A colorimeter provides compensation for changes in the color signature of an object due to lamp aging, stand off distance and view angle changes. The colorimeter senses and stores values indicative of a sample object. In use, the colorimeter senses and creates values indicative of an object. The colorimeter includes a processor which then creates an average ratio wherein the stored values and corresponding sensed values are placed in a ratio, all of the ratios are then summed, and the total is divided by the number of values. Finally, the processor compares the sensed values with corresponding stored values, wherein one of the two values is adjusted by the average ratio.
Abstract:
A portable colorimeter for characterizing the optical properties of a colored surface and in particular a colored surface containing metallic or pearlescent particles, which employs three multiangular spectrophotometric measurements to derive color constants for the surface. The colorimeter is a compact integrated unit housing irradiation, detection, control, analysis and display means and employs three illumination angles, preferably -30.degree., 0.degree., and 65.degree., and one detection angle, preferably 45.degree., all measured from the sample normal. The method includes determining the tristimulus values of the color of the sample surface from low resolution spectral reflectance data preferably using twelve detector elements.

An apparatus for measuring a diamond color comprises a light source composed of a lamp and an integrating sphere for diffusing light therein emitted from the lamp; a diamond holder including diamond supporting head means and suction base means, thereby positioning the table facet of the diamond in the integrating sphere for allowing the diffused light from the light source to fall on the table facet of the diamond; a monochromator for separating a beam of light as it emerges from the diamond through the table facet side into a spectrum; a photodetector for detecting the light from the monochromator; variable slit means disposed in at least one of the monochromator and the photodetector for adjusting the size of the beam of light to a diameter of the diamond; a measurement unit for controlling at least the monochromator to obtain a spectrum of the light which has passed through the diamond; and an arithmetic unit for deriving tristimulus values X, Y and Z from the spectrum of the light from the diamond; which is able to measure the colors of brilliant-cut diamonds easily and objectively.

A novel apparatus for the measurement of color of a sample which comprises an illumination means to illuminate the sample, an electro-optical sensing head to receive the light from the illuminated sample and to output electronic signals and an electronic processing unit to process the signals. The light source may in the preferred embodiment be the sun or the sample itself and a reference optical path is used for reference which is the same optical path as the optical path from the light from the sample. The tristimulus values X, Y, Z and the chromaticity coordinates x, y of the sample with respect to the CIE standards for luminance and chromaticity values are produced for accurate color measurement.

A novel apparatus for the measurement of color of a sample which comprises an illumination means to illuminate the sample, an electro-optical sensing head to receive the light from the illuminated sample and to output electronic signals and an electronic processing unit adapted to process the signals. The system uses, in the preferred embodiment, a moving spatial filter to modulate a spectrum and a masking means to selectively mask the light from the modulated spectrum. A reference optical path and reference light signals are produced for subsequent processing with the light from the sample, corrected for any errors produced and processed in an analogue electronic unit to produce the tristimulus values X, Y, Z and the chromaticity coordinates x, y of the sample with respect to CIE standards for luminance and chromaticity values.
