Abstract: A coupling pin anti-rotation arrangement is provided for a switchable roller finger follower within a valve train of an internal combustion engine capable of switching between at least two valve lift modes. The switchable roller finger follower includes an inner lever, an outer lever, a coupling pin, and an anti-rotation clip. The coupling pin, located on one of the inner or outer levers, has a first locking surface, and a first, and preferably, second coupling pin-side anti-rotation flat. The coupling pin moves longitudinally within a coupling pin bore to a first, locked position and a second, unlocked position. The anti-rotation clip has a first and, preferably, second clip-side finger to slidably guide the first and second coupling pin-side anti-rotation flats to ensure alignment of the first locking surface with a second locking surface, located on the other of the inner lever or the outer lever, during all modes of operation.

Abstract: A switchable finger follower is provided having an inner lever with a sliding pad located between first and second inner lever ends. The sliding pad has at least one of an anti-friction coating or a surface finish of Ra 0.05 or better forming a cam contact surface. An outer lever supports the inner lever, and includes a first outer lever end mounted for pivoting movement at the first end of the inner lever by a pivot axle. A coupling pin is arranged on one of the inner or outer levers on an end opposite from the pivot axle. The coupling pin has a coupling projection with a first locking surface, and is moveable from a first, locked position with the first locking surface engaged with a second locking surface located on the other of the inner lever or the outer lever, to a second, unlocked position. A lost motion element is arranged between the inner lever and the outer lever.

Abstract: A novel latch seat for a switching rocker arm assembly used in variable valve actuation (VVA) systems for internal combustion engines. The seat is formed interactively in the assembled switching rocker arm using a novel fixture and press. The press interactively creates a curved dimple of the correct curvature, position and depth while measuring several lash dimensions. Since the latch seat is formed on the assembled rocker arm assembly, the latch seat depth is designed to account for the inaccuracies in the rocker arm assembly parts which create lash. Therefore all of the parts may be made with less precision since the latch seat is sized to compensate for the inaccuracies of all of the parts. The rocker arm assembly parts now may be manufactured to less stringent standards, but result in a rocker arm assembly with same accuracy of rocker arm assemblies manufactured to previous standards.

Abstract: An exhaust valve includes a stem extending to a valve end. The valve end includes a pressure relief apparatus. An engine assembly includes a casing defining a cylinder bore, a combustion chamber and an exhaust passage. The combustion chamber is disposed between the exhaust passage and the cylinder bore. The engine assembly also includes a piston movable in the cylinder bore. The engine assembly further includes an exhaust valve movable between a first position blocking fluid communication through the exhaust passage and a second position allowing fluid communication through the exhaust passage. The exhaust valve includes a pressure relief apparatus configured to allow fluid communication through the exhaust valve from the cylinder bore to the exhaust passage when the exhaust valve is in the first position and a predetermined pressure threshold occurs in the cylinder bore between the exhaust valve and the piston.

Abstract: A valvetrain includes a rocker arm assembly having an electromagnetic latch housed in a chamber formed by a rocker arm. The chamber may be a retrofit hydraulic chamber. A flux shifting bi-stable latch provides a sufficiently compact design. Isolation of the magnetic elements within the rocker arm chamber may provide protection from metal particles carried by oil in an operating environment for the rocker arm assembly. Wiring connections to the rocker arms may be made through spring posts on the rocker arms. Connection to the rocker arms may be made with springs that can endure the rapid motion induced by the rocker arms. A wiring harness for the rocker arms may attach to hydraulic lash adjusters of the rocker arm assemblies. The rocker arm assemblies and their wiring may be formed into a unitary module that facilitates installation.

Abstract: A multiple variable valve lift apparatus may include a moving cam formed in a hollow cylindrical shape into which a camshaft is inserted. In particular, the moving cam rotates together with the camshaft, moves in an axial direction of the camshaft, and includes a cam guide protrusion and a plurality of cams realizing different valve lift with each other. Moreover, the apparatus includes: an operating unit selectively guiding the cam guide protrusion; a controller controlling the operating unit; a valve opening/closing unit contacting with any one cam of the cams; and at least two pins disposed at the operating unit so as to guide the cam guide protrusion. The cam guide protrusion includes an inserted portion being selectively inserted between the pins and a shift portion.

Abstract: A modified rocker assembly having an offset end is designed for engine heads having an obstruction preventing use of a symmetric switching rocker arm. The modified rocker assembly has an obstructed side and a non-obstructed side and has an outer structure with a first end, and an inner rocker structure fitting within the outer structure, the inner structure also having a first end. The modified rocker assembly has an axle pivotally connecting the first ends of inner structure to the outer structure, such that the inner structure pivots within the outer structure around the axle. At least one torsion spring on one side of the axle rotationally biases the inner structure relative to the outer structure. The outer structure is offset on the obstructed side as it extends from the second end toward the first end, creating the first offset portion to provide additional clearance on the obstructed side.

Abstract: A system for selectively deactivating engine valves of a cylinder of an internal combustion engine. The system employs switching rocker assemblies between the valves of the engine and rotating cam lobes. The disclosed design is able to operate using a single cam lobe per valve. The rocker assembly employs a first arm pivotally attached to a second arm at one end. The first arm engages the valve and the second arm has a roller bearing that engages the cam lobe. A latch causes the first and second arm to move in unison following the cam surface when latched. When unlatched, the second arm follows and moves according to the rotating cam surface, but the first arm does not follow and does not actuate the valve, thereby deactivating the cylinder.
