Abstract: An ion guide is provided for a spectrometer. The ion guide comprises a first electrode assembly, comprising a plurality of guide electrodes aligned along a central axis. Each guide electrode comprises an aperture. The apertures define an ion channel from a first end of the first electrode assembly to a second end of the first electrode assembly. The ion channel is configured to receive an ion beam at the first end. The guide electrodes are configured to receive RF voltages to define a confinement volume for the ion beam, wherein the confinement volume is centred about the central axis. The ion guide comprises a second electrode assembly adjacent to the first electrode assembly, wherein the second electrode assembly is configured to receive a DC voltage, such that a centre of the ion beam is deflected to be off the central axis.

Abstract: A device includes a first surface, a second surface and a controller. The second surface is adjacent to the first surface. The first and the second surfaces define a first ion channel therebetween. The first ion channel extends along a first direction. The second surface includes a first plurality of electrodes including a first electrode and a second electrode spaced apart from the first electrode along a second direction lateral to the first direction. The first plurality of electrodes extends along the first direction. The first electrode is configured to receive a first voltage signal and generate at least a portion of a pseudopotential that inhibits ions in the first ion channel from approaching the second surface. The second plurality of electrodes is located between the first electrode and the second electrode and arranged along the first direction. The second plurality of electrodes are configured to receive a second voltage signal to generate a first traveling drive potential that travels along the first direction. The first traveling drive potential is configured to guide ions along the first ion channel. The device further includes a controller electrically coupled to the first and the second surface. The controller is configured to generate the first voltage signal and the second voltage signal.

Abstract: A device for manipulating charged particles using an axial electric field as they travel along a longitudinal axis of the device is disclosed. The method comprises providing an outer electrode for generating an electric field and providing a plurality of inner electrodes that are separated by gaps of different lengths. Abstract: A mass analyser comprises a pair of electrode arrays. Each array has a set of focusing electrodes which are supplied, in use, with voltage to create an electrostatic field in a space between the electrode arrays causing ions to undergo periodic, oscillatory motion in the space, ions passing between electrodes of the sets of focusing electrodes and being repeatedly focused at a center plane, mid-way between the electrode arrays. At least one electrode of each set of focusing electrodes has an electrode surface closer to the center plane than the electrode surfaces of other electrodes of the same set. The analyzer may be an ion trap mass analyser or a multi-turn ToF mass analyzer.

Abstract: An ion mobility separator and a method of separating ions according to their ion mobility are disclosed. An RF ion guide is provided having a plurality of electrodes that are arranged to form an ion guiding path that extends in a closed loop. RF voltages are supplied to at least some of the electrodes in order to confine ions within said ion guiding path. A DC voltage gradient is maintained along at least a portion of a longitudinal axis of the ion guide, wherein the voltage gradient urges ions to undergo one or more cycles around the ion guide and thus causes the ions to separate according to their ion mobility as the ions pass along the ion guide. The closed loop ion guide enables the resolution of the ion mobility separator to be increased without necessitating a large device, since the drift length through the device can be increased by causing the ions to undergo multiple cycles around the device.

Abstract: The invention relates to an ion generation device and an ion generation method, and more particularly to a device and a method which generates ions at the low pressure and then said ions can be transferred into the next stage in an off-axis manner. In the invention, ions from electrospray or other types of ion source are generated in the pressure which is lower than atmosphere pressure. A followed ion guide device can then transfer most of said generated ions into next stage in an off-axis manner, while most of neutral noise can be eliminated in this process.
