    Abstract: Optically active compounds of the formula I in which the indices and variables have the following meanings: R is a C1-C12-alkyl or -perfluoroalkyl group in which, in addition, one or two non-adjacent CH2 or CF2 groups may be replaced by O atoms and/or -CO- groups and/or -CO-O- groups and/or -CH=CH- groups and/or -CH-halogen- and/or -CHCN- groups and/or -O-CO-CH-halogen- and/or -O-CO-CHCN- groups, or is a C1-C12-alkyl group which may carry a terminal chemically reactive group and in which one CH2 group may be replaced by an O atom, A and A , independently of one another, are 1,4-phenylene which is unsubstituted or substituted by one or two F and/or Cl- and/or Br atoms and/or CH3 groups and/or CN groups, and in which one or two CH groups may be replaced by N, 1,4-cyclohexylene in which, in addition, one or two non-adjacent CH2 groups may be replaced by O atoms and/or S atoms, piperidine-1,4-diyl, 1,4-bicyclo[2.2.2]octylene, naphthalene-2,6-diyl, decahydronaphthalene-2,6-diyl or 1,2,3,4-tetrahydronaphthalene-2,6-diyl, A is optionally substituted phenyl, Z is -CO-O, -O-CO-, -CH2CH2-, -OCH2-, -CH2O-, -CIC- or a single bond, m is 0, 1, 2 or 3 with the proviso that, if m = 2 or 3, the radicals R and Z in the individual groups -(A -Z) may be identical to or different from one another. The compounds according to the invention are used as components of chiral, tilted, smectic, liquid-crystalline phases.

    Abstract: In a new process for the prodn. of D- or L-alanine of high enantiomeric purity, an optically active chloropropionic acid of high enantiomeric purity is reacted with ammonia or ammonia-yielding cpds. at 50-110 deg.     Abstract: Prepn. of 3-aminomethyl-3,5,5-trimethylcyclohexylamine (isophorone diamine; IPDA) from 3-cyano-3,5,5-trimethyl-cyclohexanone (isophorone nitrile; IPN) is carried out in three separate reaction zones by: (a) reacting IPN with excess liquid NH3 at 20-150 deg.C and 50-300 bar; (b) hydrogenating the reaction prod. with H2 in the presence of excess NH3 at 50-100 deg.C and 50-300 bar; and (c) hydrogenating the reaction prod. with N2 at 110-160 deg.C and 150-300 bar. Acidic metal oxide catalyst is used in stage (a); and hydrogenation catalyst, opt. with basic components or on neutral or basic supports, in stages (b) and (c).
