Abstract: In a method of marking hydrocarbons by addition of at least one first marker, at least one second marker which cannot be removed completely from the hydrocarbons under the conditions of the removal of the first marker or markers is additionally added to the hydrocarbons. Hydrocarbons which have been marked by such a method and solutions comprising at least one first marker and at least one second marker as defined in the method of the present invention and also, if desired, further additives for marking hydrocarbons are also provided by the invention.

Abstract: The invention relates to a method for marking liquids with at least two marker substances, characterized in that said marker substances are absorbent in the special range of 600 to 1200 nm and emit fluorescence radiation as a result, and in that the absorption range of at least one marker substance overlaps the absorption range of at least one other marker substance. The invention also relates to a method for detecting marker substances in liquids which have been marked according to the inventive method. This method is characterized in that the sources of radiation used emit radiation in the adsorption ranges of the marker substances so that the fluorescent radiation emitted by said marker substances can then be detected, at least one of said radiation sources emitting radiation in the absorption range in which the at least one marker substance overlaps with the at least one other marker substance, and in that the number of sources of radiation used in smaller than or the same as the number of marker substances. The invention also relates to liquids which have been marked according to the inventive method. 9 claims
