Abstract:
A hybrid energy storage system (10) includes a first energy storage device (12), such as a secondary or rechargeable battery, and a second energy storage device (14), such as an electrochemical capacitor. The electrochemical capacitor provides intermittent energy burst to satisfy the power requirements of, for example, pulsed power communication devices. The first and second energy storage devices are coupled to a current controller (16) to assure that the pulse transients are not applied to the battery cell as a result of charging the capacitor.
Abstract:
An orphan condition is mitigated in a spread-spectrum communication system by determining when a remote unit (113) is likely to become an orphan (315) and adjusting remote unit (113) operating parameters (360) to force additional base stations (101, 102) to be added to the remote unit's (113) active set. In particular, when it is determined that a remote unit (113) is likely to become an orphan, T_ADD and T_COMP are adjusted so that the remote unit (113) is forced to add additional base stations (101, 102) to its active set. Increasing the number of base stations (101, 102) that a remote unit (113) is communicating with greatly reduces the probability that the remote unit (113) will become an orphan.
Abstract:
A method and device for mounting a piezoelectric element in a package without the use of adhesives. The piezoelectric device includes a substrate (104) with at least two electrical traces (118), a piezoelectric element (102) with a top electrode (108) and a bottom electrode (106), and a wirebond ball bump (100). The ball bump is ultrasonically bonded to one of the electrical traces (118) on the substrate (104), and the bottom electrode (106) of the piezoelectric element (102) is ultrasonically bonded to the ball bump (100). A wirebond (110) connects the top electrode (108) with the remaining electrical trace (118) of the substrate (104). The device is provided in a conventionally sealed package.
Abstract:
A filter co-processor (103, 109 and 109 fig.) within a Digital Signal Processor (DSP) takes advantage of the orthogonal nature of modulated signals during the equalization process. Since, after reception, only certain real/imaginary values of the received signals (112) are useful for demodulation, the filter co-processor only processes those values to estimate the transmitted signal. By processing only those values for demodulation, the filter co-processor is able to process information in a given amount of time, leading to increased processing when compared to the prior art.
Abstract:
A method of providing a resource in an electronic network (20) which includes receiving a signal associated with machine-readable data (16) read from a network navigation device (10). The network navigation device (10) has a human-viewable image (14). The method further includes identifying the resource based upon the signal, and communicating content of the resource. The method can be performed by a node (24) of the electronic network (20).
Abstract:
A system and device for, and method of, processing baseband signals to combat ISI and non-linearities on a communication system having a local loop. An actual alphabet is formed (471) from the signals actually transmitted on a channel (250). The alphabet may be used for symbol decoding (470), for example, and may avoid erroneous symbol predictions that could occur if an ideal or proscribed alphabet were used. Conventional phone systems have local loops with conventional line interfaces believed to have non-linearities vis-a-vis the proscribed companding algorithm. In particular, baseband signals created from the inverse quantization mechanisms inherent in conventional line interfaces have non-linear distortions. The actual alphabet therefore corresponds to the low fidelity signals actually transmitted by the line interface (250), with each symbol being an estimate of the signals actually transmitted (475). The estimate may be formed from an averaging function. An equalizer (460) may be used to combat ISI and other channel distortion. The alphabet and the equalizer may be updated with an error signal that is indicative of the accuracy of the alphabet's estimates (481).
Abstract:
A system for a pipeline cascaded content addressable memory CAM system for sequentially processing input data includes an input register, a CAM core, cascade logic and an output register. As the memory association functions produce matches in the CAM core, the cascade logic in parallel composites data associated with each matching CAM core. Each cascade processes a separate data input simultaneously then passes on the cumulative results to the next stage.
Abstract:
A mode tracking transducer driver (100) for a non-linear electromagnetic transducer (102) includes a voltage controlled oscillator (104) coupled within a phase lock loop to a transducer driver (106) and a mode detector (112, 108). The voltage controlled oscillator (104) generates a variable frequency output signal, and is responsive to a frequency control signal for controlling the frequency of the output signal. The transducer driver (106) generates a transducer drive signal (502) which is coupled to the non-linear electromagnetic transducer (102) to generate a tactile alert. The mode detector (112, 108) detects a mode change between at least the first operating mode and the second operating mode of the non-linear electromagnetic transducer (102), and in response thereto generates the frequency control signal (118) which establishes a quasi-resonant frequency (204) at which the tactile energy delivered by the non-linear electromagnetic transducer (102) is maximized.
Abstract:
A method of producing a glass/metal package where a glass portion of the package is built up around a provided leadframe (10) using applications of solderable and glass pastes (20) which are subsequently fired (30). The glass paste and leadframe are chosen to have similar coefficients of expansion and the leadframe is pretreated to degasify and control oxidation of the metal to promote glass adhesion to the leadframe and prevent microcracking at a glass/metal interface. A seal ring is applied to the glass paste (40) and a lid is attached to the seal ring (50). The package is used to provide a sealed inert internal environment for sensitive electronic components such as a piezoelectric element. The package may be configured for leaded or surface mounting (60).
Abstract:
A predetermined molecular structure in a sample is detected by sensing a pattern in which the sample binds to an array of binding sites in a molecular detection device (20), and comparing the pattern to a reference pattern to detect the predetermined molecular structure in the sample (22). In one embodiment, the reference pattern is generated by sensing a pattern in which a reference sample containing the predetermined molecular structure binds to a like array of binding sites. In another embodiment, the reference pattern is generated by predicting a pattern in which the predetermined molecular structure binds to the array of binding sites.
