Abstract: Multifunctional polymers containing polymerized units of (a) alpha-Acyloxyacrylonitrile, alpha-haloacrylic acid, alpha-acyloxyacrylic ester and/or alpha-hydroxyacrylic acid, (b) monoethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acids, (c) vinyl esters of saturated aliphatic monocarboxylic acids and/or vinyl alcohol and optionally (d) other monoethylenically unsaturated monomers copolymerizable with said monomers (a) to (c) and optionally (e) crosslinkers containing at least two ethylenically unsaturated double bonds and having a K value of at least 7 (determined after H. Fikentscher in acetone at 25° C. and a polymer concentration of 1% by weight), processes for preparing multifunctional polymers by copolymerizing monomer mixtures of (a) alpha-acyloxyacrylonitrile, alpha-haloacrylic acid and/or alpha-acyloxyacrylic ester, (b) monoethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acids, (c) vinyl esters of saturated aliphatic monocarboxylic acids and optionally (d) other monoethylenically unsaturated monomers copolymerizable with said monomers (a) to (c) and optionally (e) crosslinkers containing at least two ethylenically unsaturated double bonds in the presence of polymerization initiators that form free radicals and partially or completely hydrolyzing the polymerized monomer units (a) and (c) in the copolymers thus obtainable and use of the multifunctional polymers in laundry detergents and cleaners, to bind polyvalent metal ions, as a stabilizer in textile bleaching and the bleaching of pulp for papermaking.

Abstract: The present invention relates to the use of water soluble or water dispersible polymers containing carboxyl groups, optionally in latent form, and side-chains of general formula (I) -X-Y-[-O-(-Alk-O) n -R] k as additives in mineral building materials, wherein X, Y, Alk, R, n and k have the meanings cited in claim 1. Said polymers can be obtained by polymerizing ethylenically unsaturated monomers in the presence of compounds containing phosphorus and, optionally, by additional polymer-analogous transformation. The invention further relates to the production of said polymers and the use thereof. Also described are polymers, which can be obtained by polymerizing aromatic vinyl compounds, olefins, cycloolefins and/or dienes, as D monomers and anhydrides of ethylenically unsaturated dicarboxylic acids as E monomers and which can be used both as parent compounds for the above-mentioned polymers and as additives for mineral building materials.

Abstract: The invention relates to a method for modifying acid group containing polymers by reacting, at temperatures of up to 250 DEG C, a) polymers that contain polymerized into them at least 5 wt.- % of a monomer that contain monoethylenically unsaturated acid groups, that have a molecular weight ranging between 200 to 100.000 and that are obtainable by radical polymerization of monoethylenically unsaturated acids, optionally in the presence of another monoethylenically unsaturated monomer in an aqueous solution in the presence of at least 4 wt.- %, based on the monomers used for the polymerization, of a water-soluble sulfur composition in which the sulfur has the oxidation number +4, with b) unilaterally end-group terminated polyalkylene glycols, alkylpolyalkyene glycolamines or the mixtures thereof. The invention also relates to the mixtures of at least one of said compounds with up to 30 wt.- %, based on the mixtures, of ammonia, amines, alcohols, hydroxycarboxylic acids or aminocarboxylic acids.

Abstract: Preparation of the trisodium salt of isoserine-N,N-diacetic acid (I) by reaction of acrylonitrile with aqueous hydrogen peroxide to give glycidamide (II) and further reaction of II with the disodium salt of iminodiacetic acid (III) to give I, by carrying out the process continuously and, in it, successively a) reacting together acrylonitrile and aqueous hydrogen peroxide at pH 7-8 and 30-60 DEG C, b) removing unreacted acrylonitrile by distillation, c) passing the reaction mixture over a solid hydrogen peroxide-decomposing catalyst, d) reacting the aqueous solution of II, obtained in this way, with III at pH 7-9 and 40-90 DEG C, e) reacting the resulting solution with a basic sodium compound at pH 9-14 and 60-95 DEG C, f) removing the ammonia which is produced by distillation and g) if desired, working up the aqueous solution of I, obtained in this way, in a manner known per se to give solid I.
