Abstract: A method for the production of formaldehyde by gas phase oxidation of methanol vapour with a gas flow containing a molecular oxygen in the presence of solid bed catalyst containing iron and molybdenum is carried out in a reactor (1) comprising thermal sheet metal plates (2) which are arranged in the longitudinal direction of the reactor (1) and spaced from each other. A heat transfer medium flows through the gaps between the plates. The heat transfer medium is transferred via inlets and outlets 3, 4 to the thermal sheet steel plates (2), and gaps (5) between the thermal sheet steel metal plates (2) and which are filled with the solid bed catalyst and into which the gas containing the methanol vapour and the molecular oxygen flows.
