Abstract:
A process for measuring the thickness of a layer of powder upon the surface of a workpiece comprises depositing a layer of powder on the surface of the workpiece and simultaneously on the surface of an adjacent wire, directing the powder coated wire past a sensor capable of measuring the diameter of the powder coated wire, and comparing the diameter of the powder coated wire to the diameter of the uncoated wire.
Abstract:
The present invention relates to a thermosetting powder paint comprising, as essential components, (A) a copolymer of particular composition composed of a glycidyl group-containing monomer, styrene and other monomer copolymerizable therewith and, as curing agents capable of reacting with the component (A) to crosslink the component (A), (B) an aliphatic polycarboxylic acid and (C) a linear anhydride of an aliphatic polycarboxylic acid; a coating method using the above thermosetting powder paint; and a coated article obtained by using the above thermosetting powder paint. The above thermosetting powder paint, when used as a paint for automobile, has excellent storage stability and gives a coating film having excellent appearance, properties, weathering resistance and yellowing resistance; therefore, the paint can be favorably used particularly as an top coat and an intermediate coat for automobile and its parts.
Abstract:
Methods and apparatus are disclosed for spraying powder into the interior of welded hollow can bodies from a spray gun mounted to the welding arm of a can forming machine. The spray gun can either apply a stripe of highly charged powder on the welded seam areas of hollow can bodies, or can simultaneously apply a coating of powder having a first thickness on the longitudinally welded seam areas and a second thickness less than the first thickness on the remainder of the interior surface. Air is vented off from the powder flow being transported through the welding arm so that the powder to air ratio is increased. Air is introduced at the downstream end of the welding arm to provide a suction force to help draw the powder flow through the welding arm and to increase the velocity of the powder flow for better tribo charging of the powder in the gun and to improve spray pattern stability. A flow of cleaning air through the powder spray gun prevents powder from collecting on the front surface of an offset nozzle secured to the spray gun. The gun assembly is affectively grounded to prevent arcing, and has an exterior shape which has been geometrically configured to improve powder coating of the can.
Abstract:
Wood is electrostatically coated with a thermosetting powder coating system in which a mixture of a self-curing epoxy resin and a catalyst therefore is extruded and a low temperature curing agent are both pulverized and the powders are blended with conventional additives to make a coating powder which is deposited on a wooden substrate and heated to cure. The mixture of resin and catalyst does not cure within the extruder but it is made to cure at low temperatures by the separate addition of the curing agent. A small amount of the low temperature curing agent, insufficient to cause substantial curing during extrusion may be used in place of the catalyst.
Abstract:
Particles are adhesively bond to a support such as a glass or metal strip by covering the support with a film of a sol-gel solution by immersing in a liquid containing an organometallic compound, such as an organic silicon compound. The film is allowed to gel and during gelling, mineral particles are projected against the coated support. The gelled film coated with particles is dried and unbonded particles are removed. The method is of particular application to adhesively bonding clay, carbonate and silica particles.
Abstract:
Paperboard packaging material is disclosed for use in the manufacture of cartons for products which give off significant odors or aromas. The packaging material is treated to absorb odors generated by the products packaged in the packaging material. For this purpose, the paperboard packaging material is coated on one surface with an odor sorbing coating composition comprising activated carbon dispersed in an aqueous binder system. The odor sorbing coating covers substantially all interior surfaces of cartons formed from the packaging material to provide an effective concentration of activated carbon sufficient to render the contents substantially odor-free.
Abstract:
A spray device and method for the coating of objects with powder coating material. A high voltage electrode or several electrodes are located on only one side of the coating material stream in the vicinity of a spray orifice for electrostatically charging the coating material. A first flow of compressed air is directed over the electrodes to keep the coating material from accumulating on the electrode and to shape the envelope of the sprayed coating material. A second stream of compressed air is directed at the stream of coating material to counteract the deflection of the stream by the first flow and by the effects of the high voltage. Better coating efficiency (reduced loss of sprayed powder) is achieved than with electrodes arranged on both sides of the coating material stream.
Abstract:
An air regulator system for a powder coating system and method of operating the system whereby air regulators constructed with inexpensive, on-off servo control valves are positioned side by side and secured to a common bracket and are operated with a pulse width modulating circuitry that quickly and accurately controls the regulator. The circuitry is carried on a circuit board which is also mounted to the common bracket.
Abstract:
A process for improving the electrostatic charge developed on a resin powder composition for electrostatic coating of solid objects and the method of application thereof. The resin powder comprises (i) a thermosetting or thermoplastic resin and (ii) an electrostatic property modifying agent (polyalkylene ether, polyalkylene glycol, polyethoxylated stearyl alcohol) incorporated in the resin or on the surface of the resin. The methods of application of the powder involves charging the powder by electrical induction/conduction and spraying the charged powder onto a grounded solid object to which it adheres prior to the thermal fusing to produce a permanent finish.
Abstract:
An improved power supply for an electrostatic spray gun device having a voltage multiplier circuit adjusts to variations in the output load conditions of the multiplier circuit and dynamically modifies the operational loadline of the multiplier circuit in order to maintain optimal operating conditions for the spray gun device notwithstanding output load variations. The power supply utilizes a loadline manipulation circuit coupled to a feedback circuit that monitors the output load, and the manipulation circuit, in response to a feedback signal from the feedback circuit that is proportional to the output load, varies the input voltage level to the multiplier circuit to modify the loadline of the power supply in response to varying load conditions. The manipulator means of the power supply has memory means to store a variety of external commands which will control the manipulation means and a user interface to enter the external commands into the memory. The power supply also comprises a voltage limiting circuit coupled to the output of the multiplier circuit which regulates the output voltage level of the multiplier circuit so that when the output load current increases above a predetermined maximum level the output voltage is reduced to reduce the high voltage stress on the multiplier circuit and high voltage circuitry and reduce the amount of insulation that must surround the multiplier circuit and high voltage circuitry of the power supply in order to insulate it from ground potential.
