A system is provided for applying a chemical agent within a pipe. The system includes a skid assembly, moveable longitudinally within the pipe and a delivery nozzle carried by the skid assembly and coupleable to an external chemical agent supply. A dispensing tip is carried by the delivery nozzle, the dispensing tip being configured to deliver a controlled stream of chemical agent within the pipe toward an internal surface of the pipe. The dispensing tip is held above a surface of fluid carried by the pipe while at least a portion of the skid assembly is positioned below the fluid surface. The dispensing tip delivers the controlled stream of chemical agent upwardly away from the fluid surface.

Apparatus and method for cleaning the inner surface of a pipeline from deposits and for forming a protective coating are disclosed. The apparatus includes a cleaning tool which is caused to move in the interior of the pipeline by a flow of a fluid, the cleaning tool comprising a plurality of guide discs engaging the pipeline surface and mounted along a longitudinal axis of the cleaning tool, an anode positioned inside the cleaning tool, and an impressed current source electrically connected to the anode and the interior of the pipeline, the interior of the pipeline acting as a cathode when current is applied from the current source so that ions flow from the anode, through the fluid, to the interior of the pipeline.

Processes and devices useful in the application of coatings (14) to the interior of tubes (10) are described. Such processes (40, 400) may include applying a layer (20) of coating fluid (18) to the internal surface (16) of the tube (10) and passing a smoothing member (22) through the tube (10) at a distance from the internal surface (16). The viscosity of the coating fluid (18) may be selected so that the layer (20) of coating fluid (18) has a thickness substantially equal to or in excess of a predetermined wet film thickness (Twf) correlated to a desired final thickness (Tf) of the coating (14). The distance between the smoothing member (22) and the internal surface (16) may substantially correspond to the predetermined wet film thickness (Twf). The smoothing member (22) may smooth the coating fluid (18) and remove coating fluid (18) in excess of the wet film thickness (Twf) from the internal surface (16).

A coating device for coating an inside of a hollow body with an atomized fluid has at least one atomizing tube enclosing an atomizing channel. A pressurized propellant gas for atomizing an unatomized fluid can be introduced into the atomizing tube. The atomizing tube has at least one outlet opening and further has at least one hollow needle having a discharge opening for the unatomized fluid. The at least one hollow needle interacts with the atomizing channel and is arranged essentially coaxially thereto. The atomizing tube and the hollow needle form a Venturi arrangement.

The invention relates to a machine for coating the interior of a pipe. The machine can be pulled through and positioned within a pipe or pipeline by a internal pipe tractor, and can be used to apply viscous liquids, including two part epoxies and urethanes, to the interior wall of the pipe. The machine is typically used for the overcoating of portions of pipe having defects in their internal coatings, for example, at their girth welds.
