Abstract: A confocal microscope, operable to focus on any of a plurality of portions of a sample, is optically coupled to a light source and to a spectrograph module. When the confocal microscope focuses on a particular portion of the sample, the confocal microscope directs incident light from the light source to the particular portion and directs responsive light from the particular portion to the spectrograph module. The spectrograph module can be operated using a first diffraction grating having a first line density to obtain a Raman spectrum of the responsive light from the particular portion of the sample. The spectrograph module can also be operated using a second diffraction grating having a second line density that is less than the first line density to obtain a fluorescence or phosphorescence spectrum of the responsive light from the particular portion of the sample.

Abstract: A method of securing a modulation range of a wavelength-variable radiation source as part of the measurement of an absorption line of a substance comprises: the radiation source being controlled to transmit radiation such that the wavelength of the radiation runs through the modulation range in accordance with a time pattern; the radiation being filtered by means of a filter in whose pass band the absorption line is disposed and which has at least one filter flank whose actual wavelength is within the modulation range; a spectrum of the filtered radiation being determined in that the intensity of the filtered radiation is detected with respect to the time pattern; and a determination being made whether the spectrum has the at least one filter flank.

Abstract: An optoelectronic module includes a light guide arranged to receive light, such as ambient light or light reflected by an object. The light guide has a diffractive grating that includes multiple sections, each of which is tuned to a respective wavelength or narrow band of wavelengths. The module further includes multiple photosensitive elements, each of which is arranged to receive light diffracted by a respective one of the sections of the diffractive grating. The module can be integrated, for example, as part of a spectrometer or other apparatus for optically determining characteristics of an object.

Abstract: Novel monolithic cyclical reflective spatial heterodyne spectrometers (CRSHS) are presented. Monolithic CRSHS in accordance with the invention have a single frame wherein a flat mirror, roof mirror, and symmetric grating are affixed. The invention contains only fixed parts; the flat mirror, roof mirror, and symmetric grating do not move in relation to the frame. Compared to conventional CRSHS known in the art, the present invention enables much smaller and lighter CRSHS, requires less time and skill for maintenance, and is a better economic option. The disclosed invention may include fixed field-widening optical elements or a fiber-fed assembly.

Abstract: An on-chip optical filter having Fabri-Perot resonators and a spectrometer may include a first sub-wavelength grating (SWG) reflecting layer and a second SWG reflecting layer facing each other. A plurality of Fabri-Perot resonators are formed by the first SWG reflecting layer and the second SWG reflecting layer facing each other. Each of the Fabri-Perot resonators may transmit light corresponding to a resonance wavelength of the Fabri-Perot resonator. The resonance wavelengths of the Fabri-Perot resonators may be determined according to duty cycles of grating patterns.

Abstract: An imaging spectrometer receives a beam of light from a slit and outputs the beam of light to a focal plane. The output beam of light at the focal plane is dispersed in accordance with a spectral composition of the beam of light received from the slit. The imaging spectrometer comprises first to fourth curved reflective portions. The first to fourth curved reflective portions are arranged so that the beam of light, in its passage from the slit to the focal plane, sequentially strikes the first to fourth curved reflective portions and is reflected by the first to fourth curved reflective portions. Further, the first to fourth curved reflective portions are alternatingly concave or convex, respectively, along the passage of the beam of light. At least one of the first to fourth curved reflective portions has a reflective grating structure. Further disclosed is a method of manufacturing such imaging spectrometer.
