Abstract:
A method for producing at least a polymer surface layer on at least part of the inner surface of a hollow article that is at least partially of plastic, comprising coating said at least part of the inner surface of the hollow article by establishing a low pressure gas atmosphere within the hollow article, formin a polymerizable plasma within the article by excitation of the gas atmospher within the article by high-frequency electromagnetic energy, and allowing polymerization of the gas atmosphere to take place, whereby a polymerized coating is applied to said part of the inner surface, the gas atmospherre that forms the plasma containing a component that predominantly forms chains at sufficient speed and can be polymerized under the particular plasma conditions, and a component that forms predominantly branching or cross-linking points and can be polymerized under the particular plasma conditions.
Abstract:
The invention relates to a coated film composition comprising:a) a biaxially oriented high density polyethylene (HDPE) film comprising at least 50 wt. % of HDPE having a density of 0.960 or greater; andb) a coating which is derived from the group consisting of polyvinylidene chloride polymer or copolymer, acrylic acid polymer or copolymer, and polyvinyl alcohol polymer (PVOH); and its method of manufacture.
Abstract:
A method for providing an abrasion-resistant, radiation-cured coating on a surface of a polymeric substrate is disclosed, as well as the article produced from the method. The uncured coating material is applied to the substrate, followed by the expulsion of air from the coating. The coating is then cured by directing the radiant energy through the substrate from the surface opposite the surface having the coating thereon to contact the radiation-curable coating.
Abstract:
The moisture or water vapor barrier protection of a composite pressure vessel suitable for use as a composite cased solid propellant rocket motor is improved by immersing the pressure vessel, during pressure testing thereof, in a curable liquid polymer solution, optionally containing electrically conductive material such as metallic flakes or powder, so that the solution may flow into open voids, cracks or fractures in the pressure vessel and subsequently curing the curable liquid polymer in said voids, cracks or fractures.
Abstract:
The invention relates to a method and apparatus for treating a moving web prior to the applying of a photosensitive coating liquid. In order to suppress the entrapment of air between the coating layer and the web, the surface of the web is electrostatically charged so that the coating liquid will be attracted to the web. Wide variations of the potential distribution across the web are avoided by subjecting the web to heat while simultaneously bleeding off part of the surface potential. The heating step increases the mobility of electrostatic charge and accelerates the charge redistribution across the web. The web is subsequently cooled to a temperature between 5.degree. and 25.degree. C. in order to preserve the surface potential of the web until the web is coated.
Abstract:
Organic coatings adhere better to polyester film base if the film base is first subjected to electron-beam irradiation while passing through an inert atmosphere such as nitrogen.
Abstract:
Disclosed is a primer-surfacer composition comprising a vehicle of a balanced acrylic polymer of methyl methacrylate, butyl methacrylate and methacrylic acid, the resultant polymer having an acid value in the range of about 25 to 35, the polymer having a relative viscosity of about 16 to 32 poise measured at 40% polymer solids in a toluene and isopropyl alcohol solvent at 25.degree. C. The primer-surfacer may also contain dispersed pigments and/or fillers such as carbon blacks, talc, iron oxide, clay, etc. The primer-surfacer composition is primarily used over unprimed, primed or previously finished metal or plastic substrates to provide a surface to which an acrylic lacquer, an acrylic enamel, an alkyd enamel or a polyurethane enamel coating can be applied. The primer-surfacer of this invention may be easily sanded to provide a finish for vehicles of excellent intercoat adhesion, excellent chip and corrosion resistance and excellent fill.
Abstract:
A method is provided for end finishing an elongated composite trim strip. The show surface of a strip is first coated with a mask material. The strip is then cut so that the mask material covers the show surface adjacent the cut end. The end is painted and the mask material peeled away taking with it any excess paint and providing a clean edge between the painted end and the strip's show surface.
Abstract:
Disclosed is a process for forming an uninterrupted coating of uniform thickness on the inside of a length of tubing which comprises the steps of forming a loop of tubing with a downwardly inclined portion and an upwardly inclined portion; filling the cavity of the tubing forming the loop with a coating liquid; transporting the tubing along its longitudinal axis in a substantially vertically upward direction to coat the inside of the tubing, above the level of the coating liquid, with an initial layer of coating material; constricting the tubing to lay partially flat along a narrow zone running transverse to the direction of transportation above the level of the coating liquid to retain the greater part of the coating liquid in the constriction zone and form a thin layer of coating liquid of desired thickness on the inside; of the tubing issuing from the constriction zone; filling the cavity of the tubing issuing from the constriction zone with support gas; and exposing the tubing to the action of heat at a sufficiently high temperature to fuse the coating layer to the inside of the tubing and form an uninterrupted film of uniform thickness on the inside of the tubing. Also disclosed is an apparatus for carrying out the process of the present invention.
