Abstract:
A method for forming a coating film is here disclosed which comprises the steps of coating a member with a coating material containing a pigment for a thermosetting base coat, overcoating the coated member with a coating material for a thermosetting clear coat in a wet-on-wet coating manner, and then thermosetting the uncured coating films simultaneously;a binder component in the coating material for the base coat comprising50 to 90% by weight of an acrylic copolymer having a hydroxyl value of from 40 to 80 mg KOH/g and an acid value of from 0.5 to 30 mg KOH/g and a glass transition temperature of from -40.degree. to 20.degree. C. which is obtained by copolymerizing 10 to 40% by weight of a hydroxyl group-containing (meth)acrylic ester, 0.2 to 10% by weight of a carboxyl group-containing vinyl monomer, 30 to 89.8% by weight of a (meth)acrylic ester and 0 to 30% by weight of another vinyl monomer, and10 to 50% by weight of a curing agent;a binder component in the coating material for the clear coat comprisingan acrylic copolymer having a hydroxyl value of from 50 to 180 mg KOH/g, an acid value of from 2 to 40 mg KOH/g and a glass transition temperature of from -40.degree. to 20.degree. C. which is obtained by copolymerizing5 to 60% by weight of a fluorine-containing (meth)-acrylic ester, 10 to 60% by weight of a hydroxyl group-containing (meth)acrylic ester, 0.2 to 10% by weight of a vinyl monomer containing an acidic group, 15 to 70% by weight of a (meth)acrylic ester and 5 to 50% by weight of another vinyl monomer, anda polyisocyanate compound;a ratio X/Y of an equivalent (X) of the OH group present in the acrylic copolymer to an equivalent (Y) of the NCO group in the polyisocyanate compound being in the range of from 1/0.5 to 1/1.5.
Abstract:
A method of applying a coating, such as a fluorocarbon barrier coating, to the threads of a fastener, particularly suitable for applying a coating to a female fastener having a threaded bore. The method includes forming a fluid suspension of the coating material, such as an unpolymerized fluorocarbon in an organic solvent, forming a drop of the coating material fluid suspension on the tip of an ultrasonic transducer and bringing the tip into proximity with the fastener threads, which are preferably preheated. The ultrasonic tip is then vibrated in the ultrasonic range, exploding the drop and coating the fastener threads with a fine mist of the fluid suspension. The fastener is then heated to vaporize the solvent and polymerize the coating material where the coating material is polymerizable. When coating female fasteners, the tip of the ultrasonic transducer is preferably lowered within the thread cylinder, adjacent the top thread.
Abstract:
A method for the direct stepwise coating of a solid substrate with a polyfunctional polymerizable surfactant to provide a multilayer assembly of a plurality of oriented monolayers of polymerized surfactant on a surface of the solid substrate comprising depositing and polymerizing sequential layers of polymerizable surfactant on the substrate from a polymerization system comprising:(a) a polyfunctional polymerizable surfactant in an aqueous or other polar solvent system; and(b) a polyfunctional polymerizable surfactant in a non-polar organic solvent systemand wherein the sequential coatings are alternately effected from the (a) and (b) polymerization systems and the polymerizable surfactant utilized is the same or different for each sequential coating, and multilayered surfactant coated solid substrate products produced by this method.
Abstract:
A process for coating a steel substrate with a corrosion resistant film. This process consists of applying a liquid phenolic epoxy film to the heated substrate allowing this film to dry for a very short time, then applying a secondary coat consisting of a powdered epoxy resin containing a suitable crosslinking agent, and baking both at an elevated temperature to complete the cure.
Abstract:
Coating compositions for coating fluid handling components, and related methods, may include in some aspects a coating composition having a trifunctional silane, a silanol, and a filler. The coating composition may be applied to a surface of a fluid handling component that is configured to be exposed to a fluid. The coating composition may be applied to at least partially cover or coat the surface. The coating composition may be configured to chemically bond with a cured primer composition that includes an epoxy.
