The present invention can be directed to a mass spectrometer, relevant parts thereof like replacement kits or upgrading kits and/or mass spectrometry methods. A mass spectrometer according to the present invention can comprise at least one ion source for generating a beam of ions from a sample. Moreover at least one mass filter downstream of the ion source can be provided and adapted to select ions from the beam by their mass-to-charge ratio (m/z). Furthermore at least one collision cell arranged downstream of the mass filter can be arranged. At least one sector field mass analyser arranged downstream of the collision cell can be further provided and at least one ion multicollector comprising a plurality of ion detectors arranged downstream of the mass analyser, for detecting a plurality of different ion species in parallel and/or simultaneously.

A control system determines the degree of fragmentation and charge reduction of precursor ions within the ion guide and varies the speed at which ions are transmitted through the ion guide in order to optimise the fragmentation and charge reduction process.

Plural ion beams emanating from one or more ion sources are conducted in multiplexed fashion through the magnetic analyzer of a mass spectrometer toward one or more collectors. In one embodiment, the beams traverse spaced paths and are received by separate collectors. In another embodiment, the beams are time division multiplexed along a common path and received by a single collector. The magnetic analyzer may be scanned during operation to simultaneously provide spectra for each of the beams and the mass spectral range of the beams compared.

The associated metadata information may be associated with the medical patient. A subset of a sample reference library may be based on the associated metadata information. The sample reference library may include a plurality of sets of mass spectrometer reference data, in accordance with embodiments. Embodiments match the mass spectrometer test data with mass spectrometer reference data of the selected subset of the sample reference library. Embodiments determine characteristic information of a source of the mass spectrometer test data (e.g. the medical patient) based on the known characteristics of the matched mass spectrometer reference data.

Additionally, a multi-collector arrangement, special uses and a method for analyzing isotopes in a sample. The mass spectrometer according to the invention has a control for the at least one deflector such that ion beams of different isotopes can be routed to at least one ion detector in the second arrangement.
