Abstract: The invention describes a process for the preparation of surfactant alcohols and surfactant alcohol ethers which are, inter alia, highly suitable as surfactants or for the preparation of surfactants. The process, starting from olefin mixtures having a defined minimum content of linear hexenes, gives mixtures having a predominant fraction of branched dodecenes, which are subsequently derivatized to give surfactant alcohols and then optionally alkoxylated. The surfactant alcohol mixture obtained in the process has a degree of branching of from 2.0 to 3.0 and in particular exhibits advantageous properties as regards ecotoxicity and biodegradability. A description is also given of the use of the surfactant alcohols and surfactant alcohol ethers as surfactants by glycosidation or polyglycosidation, sulfation or phosphation.

Abstract: The proposed process for producing n-butyraldehyde and/or n-butanol involves the following steps: (a) 1,3- butadiene is allowed to react with an amine of formula (1) R1R2NH, in which the groups independently of one another represent hydrogen, optionally substituted aliphatic or cycloaliphatic groups, or aryl or aralkyl groups, or are connected to a bridging unit which can contain heteroatoms, at high temperature and pressure and in the presence of a compound of a group VIIIb element, in the presence of an alkali metal amide, or in the presence of a basic metal oxide, to form a mixture of addition compounds of formula (II) and (III); (b) addition compound (III) is isomerised to addition compound (II); (c) additio n compound (II) is isomerised in the presence of a homogeneous or heterogeneous transition metal catalyst in liquid phase or in the presenc e of a heterogeneous catalyst containing transition metal in the gas phase to produce enamine of formula (IV); and (d) the enamine (IV) is converted, by reaction with hydrogen and water, or water, in the presence of a homogeneous or heterogeneous transition metal catalyst in liqu id phase, in the presence of a heterogenous catalyst containing transition metal in the gas phase, in the presence of an acid or in the presence of one of the above mentioned catalysts and of an acid, to n-butyraldehyde and/or n-butanol, the amine (I) being released and the released amine (I) being led back into sub-reaction (a).

Abstract: Production of surfactant alcohols or their ethers by derivatization of 10-20C olefins or mixtures, comprises: (i) metathesizing a 4C olefin mixture; (ii) removing the 5-8C olefins; (iii) dimerizing the separated olefins to a 10-16C olefin mixture; (iv) derivatizing the mixture to a mixture of surfactant alcohols; and optionally (v) alkoxylating the alcohols. Production of surfactant alcohols or their ethers by derivatization of 10-20C olefins or mixtures, comprises: (i) metathesizing a 4C olefin mixture of 1-butene/2-butene ratio at least 1.2; (ii) removing the 5-8C olefins; (iii) dimerizing the separated olefins (optionally in admixture) to a 10-16C olefin mixture; (iv) derivatizing the mixture to a mixture of surfactant alcohols (optionally after fractionation); and optionally (v) alkoxylating the alcohols. Independent claims are also included for: (1) the novel olefin mixtures obtained by steps (i) - (iii) above; and (2) the novel surfactant alcohols and their alkoxylates obtained by steps (i) - (iv) and optionally also step (v) above.

The mixture (M1) has: (i) a molar proportion of the sum of 2-hexene (H2) and 3-hexene (H3) in (H) of 4-99:1; (ii) a molar ratio of (E) to the sum of (H) and (K1a) of 1-100:1; and (iii) a ratio of (H2) to (H3) of at least 2:1, as long as (H3) is not simultaneously isomerized to increase the (H2) proportion correspondingly.
