Abstract: A catalyst systems for the polymerisation of 2-12C alk-1-enes comprises: (A) an inorganic oxide carrier with a pH of 1-6 which comprises 5-30 vol.% voids and channels; (B) at least one metallocene complex; (C) at least one metallocenium ion-forming compound; and optionally (D) at least one alkali(ne earth) or Group III metal organic compound. Also claimed are (i) the preparation of 2-12C alk-1-ene polymers at -50 to +300 deg.C and 0.5-3000 bar using these catalyst systems, (ii) 2-12C alk-1-ene polymers prepared by this method, (iii) the use of these polymers for the preparation of fibres, films or moulded articles and (iv) fibres, films or moulded articles made from these polymers.

Abstract: Statistical propylene copolymers with 2-10C alk-1-ene comonomer (alkene) units are claimed, obtained by polymerisation of propylene and alkene at 50-100 degrees C and 15-40 bar with a mean residence time of 0.5-5 hrs., in presence of a Ziegler-Natta catalyst with: (a) a titanium-containing solid component containing a magnesium compound, a halogen, a silica gel support and a carboxylate ester as electron donor; plus (b) an aluminium compound; and (c) another electron donor as cocatalysts. The silica gel support has an average particle diameter of 5-200 mu m and an average primary particle diameter of 1-10 mu m, and contains 5-20 vol% of pores or channels with an average diameter of 1-10 mu m. Also claimed is a process for the production of propylene copolymers.

Abstract: Ziegler-Natta-type catalyst system contains (a) a solid component containing titanium (Ti), obtained by reacting a Ti compound with a compound of magnesium (Mg), a halogen, an inorganic oxide as carrier, a 1-8 carbon (C) alkanol and a carboxylic ester as electron donor; and, as co-catalyst, (b) an aluminium (Al) compound and (c) optionally another electron donor compound as active constituents. In the preparation of (a), the individual components are reacted in the presence of an aromatic hydrocarbon as solvent. Also claimed are: (i) a method of producing the catalyst system; (ii) propylene polymers prepared using this catalyst system; and (iii) films, fibres and mouldings made from these polymers. Preferably component (a) is prepared in a 7-12 C alkylbenzene, especially ethylbenzene. The inorganic oxide has a pH of 1-6.5 and average particle diameter of 5-200 mu m and contains 5-30 volume-% pores or ducts with an average diameter of 1-20 mu m. It preferably is spray dried and especially consists of silica gel. The Al compound (b) is a tri-(1-8 C alkyl)-Al compound. Component (c) is an organo-silicon compound of formula R nSi(OR )4-n (I); R = 1-20 C alkyl, 5-7-membered cycloalkyl (optionally mono-substituted by 1-10 C alkyl) or 6-20 C aryl or arylalkyl; R = 1-20 C alkyl; n = 1, 2 or 3.

Also claimed is (i) a process for the production of ZNC by interacting components (a), (b) and (c) together at 0-150 degrees C and 1-100 bar; (ii) a process for the production of polymers of 2-20C alk-1-enes by polymerisation of the alkene (preferably propylene) and optionally other comonomers at 20-150 degrees C and 1-100 bar in presence of (ZNC); (iii) polymers of propylene obtained by this process.

Abstract: Propylene polymers (I) contain a matrix of propylene homopolymer and a copolymer of propylene and other alkenes. The novelty is that the polymers satisfy certain condition(s) when separated by tacticity and comonomer distribution of the polymer chain. They are first dissolved in boiling xylene, then the solution is cooled to 25 degrees C at a rate of 10 degrees C/hour. The polymers are separated, into fractions of different solubility at increasing temperature, whilst the matrix remains undissolved on heating the cooled solution to 80 degrees C. The conditions are that the amount of matrix remaining undissolved on further heating is (i) > 20 wt.% at 112 degrees C; (ii) > 8 wt.% at 117 degrees C and/or > 1 wt.% at 122 degrees C. Also claimed are (1) a method of producing (I); and (2) films, fibres or mouldings made from (I).

Abstract: Catalyst systems for the polymerisation of 2-12C alk-1-enes contain (a) an inorganic support (I), (b) metallocene complex(es) (II), (c) compound(s) (III) forming metallocenium ions, and optionally (d) organometallic compound(s) (IV) of alkali(ne earth) and/or group IIIB metal(s). (I) is an inorganic oxide with a pH of 1-6, which has pores and channels, the macroscopic volume fraction of which comprises 5-30% of the total particle. Also claimed are (i) preparation of alk-1-ene polymers using the catalyst systems; and (ii) the polymers per se. Polymerisation of 2-12C alk-1-enes, especially propylene or ethylene, is carried out at -50-300 deg C and 0.5-3000 bar, preferably in liquid monomers or in the gas phase. Prepolymerisation in suspension or in liquid monomers may be carried out first.
