Abstract: An echo canceller and method for cancelling in a return channel signal an echoed receive channel signal where the echoed receive channel signal is combined by an echo channel (142) with an input return channel signal. A control unit (152) determines from the receive channel signal, the combined signal, and first and second echo residuals, one of a plurality of control states wherein a first control state is indicative of a receive channel signal above a first predetermined energy level, wherein when the control unit (152) is in the first control state it generates the first control signal and generates the second control signal when at least one of a first energy ratio of the first echo residual signal and the combined signal exceed a predetermined level.

Abstract: Two multiply-accumulate units are coupled together so that the computation (B*C)+(D*E) can be completed in one cycle. An adder (216) adds together the products of the two multipliers (206), (208). The sum is applied to the first accumulator (220). Preferably, the second product is also applied to the second accumulator (222), and a multiplexer (218) applies either a zero or the second product to the adder (216). If two unrelated computations are to be executed simultaneously, then the zero is applied, and the output of the second accumulator is fed back to the register file (PI2). If a single (B*C) + (D*E) computation is to be executed, then the second product is applied to the adder, and the output of the second accumulator is disregarded.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for controlling various functional elements in a digital telephone system using state determination from an echo canceller. An echo canceller is used to evaluate which one of five talk states two speakers are engaged in during a telephone conversation. This state determination information is used to control a tone detector function, a noise suppressor function, an adaptive equalizer function, a transmission mute function, and a vocoder encoder function within a vocoder. During the talk state where the far-end speaker is active and the near-end speaker is inactive, the echo canceller provides a signal which disables background noise estimates from being performed in the noise suppressor and the vocoder encoder. The same signal is used to disable the tone detector and to enable the transmission mute function during this talk state.

Abstract: A velocity estimate is determined from a received signal by counting the number of times a signal in one multipath crosses a predetermined threshold in a given amount of time. A signal is received and a single multipath is extracted from the received signal. Instantaneous envelope values of the extracted multipath are calculated. A plurality of the instantaneous envelope values are used to calculate a running RMS value. A level crossing threshold is determined using the running RMS value. The number of times the instantaneous envelope value crosses the level crossing threshold is counted. The number of level crossings is mapped to a velocity estimate.
