Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce the subject dosage form producible by melt extrusion and capable of slowly releasing an agent by using a water swellable graft copolymer as a high-molecular weight binder. SOLUTION: When (A) at least one kind of a high-molecular weight binder, (B) at least one kind of agent and, as necessary, (C) a usual additive are mixed and formed under the formation of a plastic mixture, a water swellable graft copolymer or a mixture thereof is used as the ingredient A. The amounts of the formulated ingredients A and B based on the total weight of the dosage form are preferably 10-100 wt.%, more preferably 40-99.9 wt.% of the ingredient A and preferably 0-90 wt.%, more preferably 0.1-60 wt.% of the ingredient B.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To use a polymer obtained by the radical copolymerization of a specific monomer mixture composition containing a quaternizable monomer as a conditioning agent in a hair cosmetic composition. SOLUTION: The use of a polymer obtained by the radical copolymerization of a monomer mixture comprising (A) 1-99.99 wt.% of a cationic monomer or a quaternizable monomer [preferably an N-vinylimidazole derivative of the formula (R -R are each H, a 1-4C alkyl or the like)], (B) 0-98.99 wt. % of a water-soluble monomer (preferably N-vinylpyrrolidone), (C) 0-50 wt.% of a radically copolymerizable monomer (e.g. N-t-butylacrylamide) and (D) 0.01-10 wt.% of another bifunctional or multifunctional radically copolymerizable monomer (e.g. tripropylene glycol diacrylate) and further quaternizing the obtained polymer, when the monomer A is not quaternized, as a conditioning agent.

Block B contains a polymer comprising a quat. ammonium compound (monomer I) represented by formula (wherein (x) is 5-18; R and R are each a 1-5C alkyl; R is a 1-5C alkyl or a hydroxyalkyl; and X is a halide, acetate or metasulfate ion) or contains a mixture of monomer II represented by formula II (wherein R is Cn H2n+1 ; (n) is 5-18; and X is as defined in formula I) and monomer III represented by formula III (wherein R and R are each a 1-3C alkyl or a 1-3C hydroxyalkyl; and X is as defined in formula I) in a ratio of III to II of 1:20 to 20:1.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a film-forming agent having good compatibility with a hydrocarbon-based propellant and useful for a hair cosmetic capable of simultaneously exhibiting good hair setting actions and low hygroscopicity. SOLUTION: This hair setting agent and hairdressing comprise a polymer based on N-vinylcaprolactam as a film-forming agent. The polymer is composed of 35-75 wt.% of group IV of the N-vinylcaprolactam monomer (monomer A), 25-65 wt.% of a mixture of 20-60 pts.wt. of a monomer D with acrylic acid or methacrylic acid (monomer F) and 0-4 wt.% of other radically polymerizable monomers E or 35-80 wt.% of group V of the N-vinylcaprolactam (monomer A), 20-65 wt.% of a mixture of 15-50 pts.wt. of the monomer D with 5-15 pts.wt. of an alkyl acrylate or an alkyl methacrylate monomer (monomer G) having 1-4 carbon atoms in the alkyl group and further amino group unsubstituted or substituted with a 1-4C alkyl group and 0-4 pts.wt. of the other radically polymerizable monomers E. The existing carboxyl groups of the polymer are partially or wholly neutralized with an amine. The polymer contained in the hair setting agent and hairdressing is excellent in compatibility with a nonpolar propellant and exhibits good hair setting actions and curl retention and low water absorptivity.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a polymer dispersion having a low monomer content and excellent storage stability by adjusting the pH of a starting aqueous dispersion by adding at least two basic reagents thereto in a plurality of stages in the course of polymerizing a free-radical-polymerizable ethylenically unsaturated monomer in an aqueous system in the presence of a polymerization initiator. SOLUTION: At least one free-radical-polymerizable ethylenically unsaturated monomer is polymerized in the presence of an acidic polymerization initiator in an aqueous system whose pH has been adjusted at a constant value in the range of 1-7.5 by the addition of a reagent 1 being a salt of an acid selected from the group consisting of carbonic acid, boric acid, acetic acid, citric acid, and phosphoric acid. After the polymerization initiator is consumed, the polymerization is continued in the presence of a redox catalyst, and reagent 1 is further added to the aqueous dispersion to buffer it. The aqueous dispersion is adjusted to a pH of 6-10 by the addition of a reagent 2 being a base selected from the group consisting of an alkali (alkaline earth) metal hydroxide, ammonia, and a primary to tertiary amine to obtain an aqueous polymer dispersion having a residual monomer content of 100 ppm or below.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a high molecular weight polymer by carrying out a radical solution polymerization of maleic anhydride and an alkyl vinyl ether. SOLUTION: Maleic anhydride and an alkyl vinyl ether (e.g. methyl vinyl ether) is subjected to a radical solution polymerization in the presence of 5-100 wt.% copolymer of the maleic anhydride and the alkyl vinyl ether having 100,000-10,000,000 dalton molecular weight based on the total amount of the monomers to be polymerized, preferably at 40-70 deg.C. The alkyl group of the alkyl vinyl ether has 1-8C. 2, 2'-Azobis(isobutyronitrile), 2,2'-azobis(2,4- dimethylvaleronitrile) or the like is usable as a polymerization initiator. The reaction is preferably carried out in a state in which the copolymer of the maleic anhydride and the alkyl vinyl ether is dissolved in a solvent and present in a vessel.
