    Abstract: Polymers containing acid groups are modified by reaction of(a) polymers which comprise at least 5% by weight of a copolymerized monoethylenically unsaturated monomer containing acid groups, have molar masses of from 200 to 100,000 and are obtainable by free-radical polymerization of monoethylenically unsaturated acids in aqueous solution in the presence or absence of other monoethylenically unsaturated monomers and in the presence of at least 4% by weight, based on the monomers used in the polymerization, of a water-soluble sulfur compound in which the sulfur is in the oxidation state +4,with(b) polyalkylene glycols which are end-capped at one end, alkylpolyalkylene glycol amines or mixtures thereof, or mixtures of at least one of the two compounds specified with up to 30% by weight, based on the mixtures, of ammonia, amines, alcohols, hydroxycarboxylic acids or aminocarboxylic acidsat up to 250° C.

    Abstract: The invention relates to a process for the combinatorial investigation of the hardening of hardenable liquid or viscous formulations (a) in which n hardenable formulations are prepared in parallel in n containers, and (b) the degree of hardening is determined at least once on each of the n formulations by inserting a measurement tip into the formulation with a certain force and measuring the maximum penetration depth achieved as a measure of the degree of hardening of this formulation, and (c) for in each case one composition of the formulations, one or more parameters that are characteristic of the kinetics of hardening are determined from the measurement values for the penetration depth at various times after preparation of the formulations. Steps (a) to (c) are preferably carried out a number of times, and a dependence of the characteristic parameter(s) on the composition of the formulations is determined by analysis of the large number of individual values obtained in this way for the parameter(s) that is (are) characteristic of the kinetics of hardening, enabling the composition of the formulations to be optimized with respect to its hardening behavior.

    Abstract: A new binder for finely divided materials which does not emit formaldehyde on processing, is obtained from a composition which contains the reaction product of a di or tricarboxylic acid or its anhydride with ammonia and if necessary a primary amine and/or a compound having at least two OH groups, or as precursor of this reaction product, or a mixture of this di or tricarboxylic acid or its anhydride with a substance which releases ammonia on heating. Independent claims are included for: (1) a thermally hardenable substance containing at least one reaction product from (i) at least one polycarboxylic acid of formula (I), and R, X, Y, (ii), and (iii) are as defined above, and in addition, at least one further constituent selected from finely divided polymerisates of ethylenically unsaturated monomer , compounds with at least two OH groups, and polycarboxylic acid polymers; (2) a process for preparation of shaped bodies from finely divided materials, by impregnation or mixing of the finely divided material with the composition described above at 120 deg C; (3) a shaped body obtained as above; and (4) a flat-shaped article obtained as above.

    Abstract: The invention relates to a method for producing alkylpolyalkylene glycol esters of monoethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acids by esterifying (a) monoethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acids with (b) polyalkylene glycols which are closed on one side by terminal groups, in a substance in the presence of polymerisation inhibitors and esterification catalysts at temperatures of 160 DEG C at the most. The esterification is first carried out at atmospheric pressure or at pressures of up to 50 bar, the water produced during the esterification is then distilled from the reaction mixture at a pressure of between 10 and 500 mbar, and the esterification is then continued at atmospheric pressure or at pressures of up to 50 bar.

    Abstract: Polymers with a poly(meth)acrylic acid main chain, ester-linked alkylpolyalkylene glycol side chains (average molecular weight = 250-10,000) and free carboxyl groups are used as controllable dispersants for detergents or cleaning materials. The use of polymers as controllable dispersants for detergents or cleaning materials or their components. These polymers (I) comprise: (A) 1-19 wt.% of a poly(meth)acrylic acid main chain in which 0-30 wt.% of the (meth)acrylic acid units may be replaced by maleic acid (or anhydride) and/or fumaric acid units and 0-10 wt.% may be replaced by other ethylenically unsaturated comonomer units; and (B) 81-99 wt.% of side chains comprising (1-30C alkyl)-poly-(2-4C alkylene glycols) with an average molecular weight of 250-10,000, attached to the main chain by ester groups. The ratio of (A):(B) and the average molecular weight of the side chains are such that (I) contains free carboxyl groups. Independent claims are also included for: (a) detergents or cleaning materials containing surfactant(s), builder(s) and 0.2-10 wt.% of (I); and (b) the production of solid detergents or cleaning materials by mixing surfactant(s), builder(s) and optionally other conventional ingredients with water in presence of 0.2-10 wt.% (I) (based on the solids content) and then drying the resulting slurry.

The cocondensates are useful as incrustation inhibitors in detergents.
