    Abstract: A process for coproducing alkyl-substituted or unsubstituted THF and pyrrolidones by catalytically hydrogenating C 4 -dicarboxylic acids and/or derivatives thereof in the gas phase in the presence of copper catalysts and reacting GBL with ammonia or primary amines to give pyrrolidones comprises a) hydrogenating C 4 -dicarboxylic acids and/or derivatives thereof in the gas phase at from 200 to 300° C., from 0.1 to 100 bar, catalyst hourly space velocities of from 0.01 to 1 kg of reactant/l of catalyst*hour and reactant/hydrogen molar ratios of from 20 to 800 in the presence of catalysts comprising copper, aluminum and/or zinc to give mixtures of THF and GBL, b) separating the hydrogenation effluent obtained by distillation into a THF/water mixture as the top product and a GBL-containing bottom product, c) separating the THF/water mixture from step b) in a distillation facility consisting of three columns by withdrawing water from the bottom of the first column, recycling water-containing THF from the second into the first column, passing a side stream of the first into the second column, recycling the bottom product of the third column into the first column and withdrawing a distillate at the top of the first column, wherein a side stream of the second column is passed into the third column and the pure THF is obtained as the top product of the third column, d) recovering GBL from the GBL-containing bottom product from step b) by distillation and e) reacting the GBL obtained with ammonia or amines to give corresponding pyrrolidones.

    Abstract: A catalyst (I) for the gas phase hydrogenation of 4C-dicarboxylic acids and/or derivatives, preferably maleic acid anhydride, comprises copper oxide (20-94 wt.%), palladium and/or a palladium compound (0.005-5 wt.%) and an oxide support (2-79.995 wt.%) comprising oxides of Al, Si, Zn, La, Ce, Group IIIa-VIIIa elements and/or Group IA and II elements. Independent claims are also included for: (i) a process for the production of the catalyst (I) by impregnation of an oxide supported copper oxide catalyst with a solution of a soluble palladium compound, drying and optionally calcining; and (ii) a process for the gas phase hydrogenation of 4C-dicarboxylic acids and/or derivatives, preferably maleic acid anhydride in the presence of the catalyst (I).

    Abstract: Maleic anhydride production by gas-phase oxidation of n-butane with oxygen-containing gases on a heterogeneous vanadium-, phosphorus- and oxygen-containing (VPO) catalyst at 350-500[deg]C with recycling of unconverted n-butane is such that (a) the stream entering the reactor has n-butane and O 2 concentrations of 0.5-1.5 and 5-21 volume % respectively; (b) pressure at the inlet is 0.4-2 MPa abs.; and (c) 40-100% of the n-butane is converted. Maleic anhydride (MA) production by gas- phase oxidation of n-butane with oxygen-containing gases on a heterogeneous vanadium-, phosphorus- and oxygen-containing (VPO) catalyst at 350-500[deg]C with MA separation by forming a gas stream containing unconverted n-butane and water and recycling part of the n-butane to the reactor unit is such that (a) the stream entering the reactor has n-butane and oxygen concentrations of 0.5-1.5 and 5-21 volume % respectively; (b) the pressure at the inlet is 0.4-2 MPa abs.; and (c) 40-100% of the n-butane is converted.
