Abstract: Plural electronic or optical images are provided in a streak optical system, as for instance by use of plural slits instead of the conventional single slit, to obtain a third, fourth, etc. dimensionnullrather than only the conventional two, namely range or time and azimuth. Such additional dimension or dimensions are thereby incorporated into the optical information that is to be streaked and thereby time resolved. The added dimensions may take any of an extremely broad range of forms, including wave-length, polarization state, or one or more spatial dimensionsnullor indeed virtually any optical parameter that can be impressed upon a probe beam. Resulting capabilities remarkably include several new forms of lidar spectroscopy, fluorescence analysis, polarimetry, spectropolarimetry, and combinations of these, as well as a gigahertz wavefront sensor.

Abstract: Optical characteristic measuring systems and methods such as for determining the color or other optical characteristics of an object are disclosed. Perimeter receiver fiber optics are spaced apart from a source fiber optic and receive light from the surface of the object being measured. Light from the perimeter fiber optics pass to a variety of filters. The system utilizes the perimeter receiver fiber optics to determine information regarding the height and angle of the probe with respect to the object being measured. Under processor control, the optical characteristics measurement may be made at a predetermined height and angle. Various color spectral photometer arrangements are disclosed. Translucency, fluorescence, gloss and/or surface texture data also may be obtained. Audio feedback may be provided to guide operator use of the system. The probe may have a removable or shielded tip for contamination prevention. A method of producing prostheses based on measured data also is disclosed. Measured data also may be stored and/or organized as part of a data base.

Abstract: Surface plasmon resonance spectroscopy device includes an optical prism with a sample cell associated therewith and at least two sample detection areas that are provided with a thin metal coating selected for implementation of the SPR method and which contains, at least partially, surface-immobilized areas. Light is conducted via an optic fiber, collimated by a collimator with an aperture to a base surface of the prism, applied to an entrance of the optical prism. A multi adaptable diaphragm is provided between the collimator and the entrance surface. The diaphragm defines a path to the prism in a chronologically successive manner. Switching states are allocated to spectra corresponding to the switching states, whereby the spectra are obtained by detecting the light that leaves the prism through another collimator connected to another optic fiber applied to a polychromator wherein spectrally decomposed light is detected and evaluated by an evaluation and control unit.

Abstract: A tunable spectral source includes an enclosure having first and second apertures; an optical dispersive element positioned in the enclosure; and multiple pixel source elements that are individually controllable for selectively directing one or more broadband light signals through the first aperture to irradiate the optical dispersive element. Each of the broadband light signals irradiates the optical dispersive element at a unique angle of incidence. The optical dispersive element disperses the broadband light signals into spectral component signals at dispersion angles that are dependent upon the angle of incidence of each broadband light signal that irradiates the optical dispersive element. The portions of the spectral component signals that are emitted through the second aperture are determined by selecting one or more particular pixel source elements to irradiate the optical dispersive element.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a double pass monochromator that improves wavelength resolution and reduces the actual length thereof. A return reflection means 7 that reverses the direction of dispersion of the wavelength of the second pass light 1c, 1f emitted and incident on a diffraction grating 4 during the reflection. In addition, the angles of the incident and emitted light during separation of spectral components by the diffraction grating are identical during the first and second diffraction.

Abstract: An apparatus for use in Differential Optical Absorption Spectroscopy (DOAS) or in other optical apparatus provides a moveable or oscillating aperture. It has a sensor for detecting the position of the aperture, and a drive for oscillating the aperture; the drive and sensor can comprise coils forming a linear variable differential transformer, and the aperture can be spring biased to a neutral position. A control circuit is connected between the coil or other sensor and the drive coils, so that the motion of the aperture follows a desired profile. This enables significant parts of the apertures motion to be constrained to be linear. The aperture can be provided in a shuttle mounted on extension arms, whose ends are connected to resilient biassing means which serve both to support the shuttle and to bias it. More preferably, extension arms extend through pole pieces of magnets, which provide a magnetic field for drive coils. Another aspect of the invention provides a telescope apparatus, for a DOAS technique, including a baffle moveable between calibration and operational positions. This enables light from the light source to be transmitted either for measurement or for calibration allowing for changes in lamp output, etc.

Abstract: A system for translating applied linear motion into a slit width present between facing edges of two "Knife-blade" elements. In its preferred embodiment, two slide assemblies are firmly affixed to a frame such that loci of motion of slide elements thereof form an acute angle therebetween. Lower ends of each slide element, as viewed in vertically oriented frontal elevation, allow horizontal motion therebetween when said slide element lower ends are caused to simultaneously move vertically. An alternative embodiment provides that the slide elements be oriented such that said loci of motion of said slide elements are, for instance, horizontally directed. In its preferred embodiment the simultaneous motion of the slide elements is effected by a motor, preferably a precisely controlled computer driven stepper motor, which motor causes a threaded shaft therein to move vertically as a result of screw thread translation of motor imparted rotational motion to said threaded shaft.
