Abstract:
Solid extrusion coating compositions for metal substrates, a method of extrusion coating a metal substrate, and a metal article are disclosed. The extrusion coating composition is a thermoplastic material and comprises: (a) a polyester having a weight average molecular weight of about 10,000 to about 50,000, and optionally, (b) a modifying resin, such as an epoxy resin having an epoxy equivalent weight of about 500 to about 15,000. The extrusion coating composition is applied to a metal substrate in an extrusion process to provide a composition film having a thickness of about 1 to about 40 microns.
Abstract:
Engineered composite coated flat-rolled steel strip is produced in continuous line operations, in which flat-rolled steel strip, free of surface iron oxide, having a metallic corrosion-protective coating, is polymer coated in continuous-line operations in which a plurality of adherent thin-film layers of polymeric material are deposited on a strip surface. In a dual-surface polymeric coating embodiment, each surface is separately-pretreated for surface adhesion, solidified, and polymeric overhang is removed. Finish processing re-melts the polymer coating and rapidly cools that coating through glass-transition temperature to establish amorphous characteristics in the polymeric coating materials. An anhydride-modified polypropylene, first contacts the strip, an intermediate layer can include about fifteen to twenty five percent, by weight, polybutylene with the balance polypropylene; an outer surface polymeric layer includes about five to ten percent, by weight, polybutylene with the balance polypropylene.
Abstract:
Methods and apparatuses are disclosed for applying melt flowable materials to components of articles of manufacture. The methods and apparatuses disclosed herein are concerned with formation of appropriate flowable materials, control over the manner in which the flowable materials are applied, treatment of the components prior to application of the flowable materials and the like. Moreover, the apparatuses and methods may be particularly suited for applying flowable materials to surfaces and components found in automotive, aerospace, and marine vehicles.
Abstract:
A method of and an apparatus for coating a substrate with a polymer solution to produce a film of uniform thickness, includes mounting the substrate inside an enclosed housing and passing a control gas, which may be a solvent vapor-bearing gas into the housing through an inlet. The polymer solution is deposited onto the surface of the substrate in the housing and the substrate is then spun. The control gas and any solvent vapor and particulate contaminants suspended in the control gas are exhausted from the housing through an outlet and the solvent vapor concentration is controlled by controlling the temperature of the housing and the solvent from which the solvent vapor-bearing gas is produced. Instead the concentration can be controlled by mixing gases having different solvent concentrations. The humidity of the gas may also be controlled.

Abstract:
The invention relates to a method and a device for producing parts (1) having a sealing layer (2) on the surface, and corresponding parts. Said method and device are improved in that the sealing layer (2) is applied to the surface in the form of a water-free and solvent-free reactive hot melt layer based on polyurethane and hardened by atmospheric humidity, and the inventive device comprises an application station (6), a transport device (5) and a smoothing station (8).
Abstract:
A colored coating for an article is provided including a first layer polymeric coating material with a transparent base which has been pigmented to a desired color and extruded, a second layer of transparent polymeric coating material which has been co-extruded with the first layer and a third layer of polymeric coating material co-extruded with the first layer opposite the second layer, the third layer being more opaque than the first layer. The invention, while having widespread application, is particularly suitable for use as a coating for an exterior surface of an automotive vehicle body panel.
Abstract:
In order to produce an antireflective layer, a coating solution containing at least one metal alkoxy compound and at least one polymer as solid components that are dissolved in a solvent is applied to a substrate that is to be coated by means of a pouring device with a wide slit, the polymer being immiscible and essentially inert in a chemical manner towards the metal alkoxy compound. A layer which is provided with a nanoporous structure having a refractive index that is preferably smaller than 1.22 as well as good antireflective properties is obtained by selective removal of the polymer and thermochemical hardening of the coating.
Abstract:
A wiper blade for a windshield wiper, in particular for a windshield wiper of a motor vehicle, is proposed, which has a wiper blade rubber with a wiper blade rubber lip (2). In order to achieve a low dry friction coefficient, the wiper blade rubber lip (2) is fabricated partially of polyethylene (FIG. 1).
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for extrusion coating both sides of a metal strip. A metal strip, such as aluminum alloy strip, is moved through a pre-conditioner, two extrusion dies, a post-heater and a cooling system. Both sides of the strip are coated with thin coatings of thermoplastic polymers. The coated metal strip is useful for containers, such as cans and can ends, as well as for automobiles, appliances, aerospace, construction and electrical devices.
