    Abstract: Ziegler-Natta-type catalyst system contains (a) a solid component containing titanium (Ti), obtained by reacting a Ti compound with a compound of magnesium (Mg), a halogen, an inorganic oxide as carrier, a 1-8 carbon (C) alkanol and a carboxylic ester as electron donor; and, as co-catalyst, (b) an aluminium (Al) compound and (c) optionally another electron donor compound as active constituents. In the preparation of (a), the individual components are reacted in the presence of an aromatic hydrocarbon as solvent. Also claimed are: (i) a method of producing the catalyst system; (ii) propylene polymers prepared using this catalyst system; and (iii) films, fibres and mouldings made from these polymers. Preferably component (a) is prepared in a 7-12 C alkylbenzene, especially ethylbenzene. The inorganic oxide has a pH of 1-6.5 and average particle diameter of 5-200 mu m and contains 5-30 volume-% pores or ducts with an average diameter of 1-20 mu m. It preferably is spray dried and especially consists of silica gel. The Al compound (b) is a tri-(1-8 C alkyl)-Al compound. Component (c) is an organo-silicon compound of formula R nSi(OR )4-n (I); R = 1-20 C alkyl, 5-7-membered cycloalkyl (optionally mono-substituted by 1-10 C alkyl) or 6-20 C aryl or arylalkyl; R = 1-20 C alkyl; n = 1, 2 or 3.

    Abstract: Ziegler-Natta type catalyst system (ZNC), containing (a) a titanium-based solid component containing compounds of Ti and magnesium, a halogen, an inorganic oxide support (IOS) and a carboxylate ester as electron donor, (b) an aluminium compound and (c) optionally another electron donor, in which the oxide (IOS) has a pH of 1-6, an average particle diameter of 5-200 microns and an average primary particle diameter of 1-20 mu m, and contains pores or channels with an average diameter of 0.1-20 mu m in amounts of 5-30 vol%. Also claimed is (i) a process for the production of ZNC by interacting components (a), (b) and (c) together at 0-150 degrees C and 1-100 bar; (ii) a process for the production of polymers of 2-20C alk-1-enes by polymerisation of the alkene (preferably propylene) and optionally other comonomers at 20-150 degrees C and 1-100 bar in presence of (ZNC); (iii) polymers of propylene obtained by this process.

In (II), R is 1-20C alkylene (opt. with in-chain O), 5-7C cycloalkylene or 6-15C arylene (both opt. substd. with 1-10C alkyl, 1-6C alkoxy and/or 1-4C dialkylamino gp(s). or a gp. of formula -R1-Z-R2- (with R1, R2 = 1-10C alkyleme, 5-7C cycloalkylene or 6-10C arylene (opt. substd. as for R), Z = 1-10C alkylene, 1-4C dialkylamino, O or SO2).
