Abstract: An inkjet-based process for programmable deposition of thin films of a user-defined profile. Drops of a pre-cursor liquid organic material are dispensed at various locations on a substrate by a multi-jet. A superstrate is held in a roll-to-roll configuration such that a first contact of the drops is made by a front side of the superstrate thereby initiating a liquid front that spreads outward merging with the drops to form a contiguous film captured between the substrate and the superstrate. A non-equilibrium transient state of the superstrate, the contiguous film and the substrate then occurs after a duration of time. The contiguous film is then cured to crosslink it into a polymer. The superstrate is then separated from the polymer thereby leaving a polymer film on the substrate. In such a manner, non-uniform films can be formed without significant material wastage in an inexpensive manner.

Abstract: Embodiments of the present disclosure are directed to primer coatings, polymeric substrates, and methods of producing thereof, which provide enhanced adhesion and enhanced barrier properties. The primer coatings comprise an aqueous mixture of amorphous polyvinyl alcohol, an adhesion promoter comprising one or more of polyethylene and polyurethane, a crosslinker, and optionally, a catalyst. The coated polymeric substrates comprise a polymeric substrate and a coating dispersed over the polymeric substrate, where the coating dispersed over the polymeric substrate comprises amorphous polyvinyl alcohol, an adhesion promoter, and a crosslinker. The methods for making coated polymeric substrates comprise stretching a polymeric substrate, applying a coating of amorphous polyvinyl alcohol, an adhesion promoter, and a crosslinker to at least one surface of the stretched polymeric substrate, and curing the coating onto at least one surface of the stretched polymeric substrate.

Abstract: The invention relates to a coating material composition comprising at least one hydroxyl-containing polyester (A) having an OH number of 250 to 660 mg KOH/g, at least one polycarbonate diol (B) having an OH number of 35 to 500 mg KOH/g, in an amount of 1 to 20 wt %, based on the overall formula, and at least one polyisocyanate (C) containing biuret groups and having an isocyanate group content of 5.8 to 27 wt %, the hydroxyl-containing polyester (A) being different from the polycarbonate diol (B), and the coating material composition possessing a fraction of organic solvents of less than 420 g/l, and comprising, based on the solids content, 40 to 100 wt % of binders. The invention further relates to a method for producing a multicoat coating using a coating material composition of the invention, to the use of the coating material composition, and to substrates coated therewith.

Abstract: A photochromic optical article is provided, which includes: an optical substrate; a photochromic layer over a surface of the optical substrate, wherein the photochromic layer includes a photochromic compound; and a protective layer over the photochromic layer, wherein the protective layer includes a matrix that includes residues of an ethylenically unsaturated radically polymerizable material that includes at least one allophanate group. A method of forming the photochromic optical article is also provided.

Abstract: Multifunctional coating films that can be applied in liquid form are provided for compressing, sealing, covering and preserving surfaces. The films include a composition of polysaccharide materials and/or homo- or heteroglycan water-soluble polysaccharide derivatives, polyol spacers, and crosslinkers with carbonyl or carboxylic function(s). As-applied, the composition is water-soluble and reactive, but after hardening it is capable of absorbing water or swelling, impermeable to water vapour, stable against water and UV and can be biologically degraded in a controlled manner. By reacting polysaccharide materials, polysaccharide derivatives and polyol spacers with cross linkers having carbonyl or carboxylic function(s), mechanically stable flexible films are obtained, which retain their mechanical properties up to a foreign material content of 80%. The films can swell in a controlled manner and can bind up to 75% water relative to their dry weight, corresponding to the degree of crosslinking and the spacer that is used.

Abstract: The disclosure provides a polymer used for orientation film material and a method for preparing an orientation film. The polymer is formed by siloxane connecting with polyimide. The pre-tilt angle of liquid crystal molecules can be controlled within a wide range by controlling the content of siloxane in polymer, and the polymer has great heat resistance and mechanical properties. The method for preparing an orientation film of the disclosure comprises forming a precursor of orientation film by dissolving siloxane and precursor of polyimide (diamine monomer, dianhydride monomer) in a solvent, coating the precursor of orientation film on a substrate, and obtaining the orientation film after pre-solidifying and main-solidifying, the steps are simple and the prepared orientation film has a wide range of pre-tilt angle, such that the pre-tilt angle of liquid crystal molecules in the liquid crystal panels of the orientation film can be controlled within a wide range.

Abstract: A robust and self-healing coating has been developed by incorporating a thermally self-healing chemical coating on smooth and/or roughened solid. When the chemically coated solid is combined with a lubricating fluid, the material system is capable to repel a broad range of liquids and solids. The thermally self-healing chemical coating may be applied on various industrial metals, glass and plastics, and has shown exceptionally physical and chemical robustness as compared to state-of-the-art liquid-repellent coatings.
