    Abstract: PURPOSE: A method for compensating thermal deflection of a principal axis system of a machine tool is provided to compensate thermal deflection without adding extra hardware, thereby reducing the cost. CONSTITUTION: A method for compensating thermal deflection of a principal axis system(21) of a machine tool(20) includes the steps of constructing mathematical models related to thermal changes of the principal axis as formulas 1 and 2 by obtaining the maximum temperature change quantity and time constant according to each operation condition by measuring temperature change characteristic by the operation condition of the principal axis system; and embedding the mathematical models at a controller(30) of an apparatus for compensating thermal deflection of the machine tool to compensate the thermal deflection of the principal axis. The formula 1 is as follows: in the case that the principal axis starts or rotation frequency of the principal axis increases, theta=(a x rpm)(1-e¬-t/T). The formula 2 is as follows: in the case that the principal axis stops or rotation frequency of the principal axis decreases, theta=(a x rpm)e¬-t/T. In the formulas 1 and 2, rpm indicates rotation frequency of the principal axis; t indicates operation time; T indicates temperature time constant by the velocity of the principal axis; and a indicates a compensation coefficient to the velocity of the principal axis.
