Described herein is a novel, mitochondrial encoded, open reading frame, that leads to the production of a new mitochondrial peptide. Residing within the ND-Two subunit, a specific small nucleotide polymorphism disrupts expression of this mitochondrial peptide, and is correlated with an increase in obesity and diabetes, particularly in certain ethnic populations. In vitro administration of the peptide increases insulin secretion, decreases fat accumulation and improves glucose uptake in muscle cell. Antibodies generated against the peptide can be used for detecting peptide deficiency, in addition to SNP detection, supporting diagnostic approaches. In vivo studies further revealed that administration of the peptide improves glucose tolerance, thereby providing a new therapeutic avenue for a novel diabetes therapy and decreases bodyweight, thus serving as a novel obesity therapy. Generation of synthetic analogs further enhance or abrogated activity relative to the natural peptide.

A pack for smoking articles comprising: a group of smoking articles wrapped by an inner wrap and housed in a rigid outer container provided with a lid hinged to the outer container; a collar partially projecting from an open upper end; and a locking system comprising: a support element arranged in the outer container in contact with the collar and provided with two coupling wings, which project movably outwards to move closer or away from each other; and two first through openings, each obtained through a wall of the lid, houses at least a portion of a corresponding coupling wing, to activate the locking system, preventing the lid from rotating from the closed to the open position. An external action of the user releases the coupling wing to deactivate the locking system. The locking system can be reactivated by rotating the lid from the open position to the closed position.

An extensible slit sheet paper product is produced having an expandable slit pattern that forms open cells upon expansion of the paper product. The paper product is an extensible paper having an extensibility in the range from 1-9% in the machine direction and 1-5% in the cross direction. The expansion produces an array of hexagonal cells. The expanded extensible paper can be used to wrap an object for shipping by wrapping and cushioning the object in the expanded slit sheet material. The extensible, expandable slit sheet paper can be wrapped around itself to produce a void fill product.

A rigid stopper (10) made of bisphenol-free polycarbonate and silicone synthetic materials, particularly for a wine bottle (48), comprises a cylindrical body (12) and two opposing faces (16, 18), and at least two compressible-elastomeric “O”-rings (22, 24) seated in corresponding circumferential grooves (26, 28) on a side (14) of the body (12). The faces (16, 18) are comprised of foramen (42, 44) respectively which communicate with a volute-cavity (40) for the purpose of accepting a cork-screw-extractor. The volute-cavity (40) is comprised of a partition (46) at a central-plane (56) for the purpose of preventing wine from leaking through the volute-cavity (40). “O”-rings (22, 24) are compressively forced into a mouth (50) of a bottle (48) positioning either face (16) or face (18) flush with the mouth (50) thereby providing adequate compressive force in maintaining position of the stopper (10). Stopper (10) having longitudinal symmetry about a central plane (56), either face (16) or (18) of stopper body (12) maintains compatibility with random orientation of the stopper (10) in “corking” process of packaging.
