A check valve, a retainer and a washer are secured to a valve body by inserting a pin therethrough and staking a distal end portion of the pin to form a staked portion. A restraining member is interposed between the washer and the staked portion. The fit clearance between the restraining member and the shank of the pin is set smaller than the fit clearance between the check valve, the retainer and the washer on the one hand and the shank of the pin on the other. Thus, when the distal end portion of the pin is staked, the deformation of the shank of the pin is restrained by the restraining member that defines a small clearance between the same and the pin. Therefore, it is possible to suppress the enlargement in diameter of a portion of the pin where the check valve is fitted and hence possible to prevent deformation of the check valve. Thus, stable valve characteristics can be obtained.

A tool for use in disconnecting a quick-connect air-hose coupler has a pair of arms, each arm having a tool end and a handle, the arms being hinged to each other for relative rotation in generally parallel planes, such that selected relative movement of the handles causes opposite relative movement of the tool ends. An incomplete ring is formed on each tool end, the rings being generally coaxial when the rings are adjacent to each other. An insert is configured for insertion into one of the rings, the insert comprising an opening of a selected width. The handles are able to be moved toward each other for causing the rings to move away from each other while the rings engage an air-hose coupler and a hose, so as to cause the insert in one of the rings to abut a movable sleeve of an air-hose coupler while other of the rings abuts an apparatus fixedly engaging the hose, so that when sufficient force is applied to the handles the sleeve is moved relative to a body of the coupler and to the hose for disconnecting the coupler from the hose. The width of the opening of the insert is selected according to the diameter of the hose.

A keyboarded a mix of private and public text composing a source-text document is submitted through an encryption adapter intersituated in a data signal link between the keyboard and a computer system. A user selects and obfuscates the private text character portions with surrogate cloak characters in concurrent alternation with direct entry of the public text characters. A resultant protected document's data signal is safeguarded for editing and data storage without revelation of the private text content. The protected document is sufficiently secure for submission into a cloud computing environment and is immune to key-entry tracking malware. Clandestine hacking of residual data remaining in the computer firmware is negated in interpretative value by enabling the user's selective obfuscation of the source-text document's private text character content with surrogate cloak characters prior to entry into the computer system's keyboard input port.

Methods and apparatus involve monitoring spin locks for guest devices. Fully virtualized guests have multiple virtual processors configured under the scheduling control of a hypervisor on a physical hardware platform. The hypervisor posts On CPU and CR3 load information to shared communications pages for each of the processors. A monitoring module in the guest device monitors the pages to ascertain forward progress of the processors. If forward progress is being made, the virtual processors continue to spin. If not, the CPU's control is variously relinquished. The monitoring module typifies a kernel driver so that the guest can maintain an unmodified operating system. Ticket spin locks, and their ordering, are also considered as are computations for lock owners. Other features contemplate computing systems and computer program products, to name a few.

An encoder structure for an error correcting code with arbitrary parity positions is presented. The invention is effective for all error correcting codes whose parity check matrix is of the Vandermonde type. In contrast to conventional encoder circuits, the parity symbols produced by this encoder are not restricted to form a block of consecutive parity symbols at the beginning or at the end of a codeword, but may be spread arbitrarily within the codeword. A general structure of the parity check matrix for such a code is found by exploiting the special Vandermonde structure of matrices. From this general parity check matrix, an expression for the evaluation of the parity symbols in terms of a polynomial with limited degree is derived. An efficient hardware implementation of the proposed encoder is suggested.

Synchronization of data accessible by an application program is performed transparent to the application program. After a data item is instantiated by the application program, the synchronization engine performs data synchronization without or with minimal intervention of the application program. The synchronization engine may be part of an operating system. The synchronization engine is preinstalled on a computing device; therefore, application program developers can simply define whether the data items associated with the application programs should be syncable, and if so, to what extent the data items should be syncable. The application program developer is relieved of the task of developing the synchronization engine or other software components associated with data synchronization.
