Porous aluminum-containing ceramic bodies are treated to form acicular mullite crystals onto the surfaces of their pores. The crystals are formed by contacting the body with a fluorine-containing gas or a source of both fluorine and silicon atoms to form fluorotopaz at the surface of the pores, and then decomposing the fluorotopaz to form acicular mullite crystals. This process allows the surface area of the ceramic body to be increased significantly while retaining the geometry (size, shape, general pore structure) of the starting body. The higher surface area makes the body more efficient as a particulate filter and also allows for easier introduction of catalytic materials.

A method and device for separating a substrate with a laser beam. The duration of the laser beam's effect is extremely short, so the substrate is only modified concentrically about the laser beam axis (Z) without it degrading the substrate material. While the laser beam acts upon the substrate, the substrate moves relative to a laser machining head, producing plural filament-type modifications along a separating surface to be incorporated. The laser beam is initially diverted by a transmission medium having a higher intensity dependent refractive index than air, then reaches the substrate. The non-constant pulsed laser intensity increases to a maximum over the temporal course of the single pulse, then reduces, and the refractive index changes. The laser beam focus point moves between the substrate's outer surfaces along the beam axis (Z), reaching the desired modification along the beam axis (Z) without correcting the laser machining head in the z-axis.

A suction filter for an automatic transmission utilizes two different types of filter media: a coarse filter media and a fine filter media. The two types of media are arranged in series within a housing such that fluid flows through only one of the two filter media. A hinge valve is arranged in series with the coarse media. The hinge valve passively opens in response to a pressure differential. The hinge valve defines a non-zero flow area when in the closed position and an increasing flow area as it opens. The flow restriction associated with the hinge valve permits a larger ratio of coarse media area to fine media, thereby decreasing the flow restriction when the oil is cold without decreasing the clean-up rate in normal operating conditions.
