Comparative effectiveness of various oral care products such as dentifrices on preventing dental erosion may be demonstrated using simulated enamel. A substrate is prepared. A mineral layer to simulate dental enamel is nucleated by solution growth on the substrate surface. The mineral layer may comprise a homogeneous layer of hydroxyapatite or a thin veneer of hydroxyapatite on a layer of amorphous calcium phosphate. The simulated enamel is then optionally treated with an oral care product and subjected to an acid challenge. The amount of mineral layer remaining after the acid challenge illustrates the effectiveness or non-effectiveness of the oral care product at preventing dental erosion.

One embodiment of the present invention sets forth multigrid generation technique which enables accurate simulations of large scale three dimensional (3D) fluid volumes. A model of the fluid to be simulated is represented using a cell grid. The generated multigrid provides a hierarchy of increasingly coarser representations of the model that are used by a pressure solver. Eulerian simulation techniques require solving a linear system to determine pressure values for each cell within the cell grid. Different levels of the multigrid are then used to compute the pressure values for different regions of the model, maintaining accuracy near the surface of the fluid while simplifying the computations. The accurate pressure values ensure that the simulation produces detailed features of the water movement. Additionally, the multigrid pressure solver may be optimized for execution by a graphics processor.

The standard hot-plug controller (SHPC) specification may be used to generate PCI messages in a distributed switch to disconnect and/or connect virtual hierarchies of an endpoint from hosts that are connected based on multi-root input/output virtualization (MR-IOV). A management controller may instruct a SHPC to generate a PCI packet that specifies a particular virtual hierarchy to disconnect from a particular host. An upstream port connected to the host and the SHPC receives the PCI packet and uses a header that identifies the virtual endpoint in the packet to index into a routing table to identify a downstream port in the distributed switch that is connected to the endpoint. Once the PCI packet traverses the switch and arrives at the downstream port, the downstream port changes routing logic which logically disconnects the host from the specified virtual hierarchy.

A service for storing time series data provides a data pipe for receiving time series data, a query pipe for making requests to the service, and a result pipe for receiving output from the service. Data sent to the query pipe is processed by an ingester that prepares metadata indices associated with blocks of incoming time series data and stores the blocks of data in a time series database and the indices in a separate index database. A query layer receives queries from the query pipe and uses the index database to determine which data blocks are needed to process the query, and then requests only those data blocks from the time series database. Processing of the query is performed within the time series database only on those data nodes that contain relevant data, and partial results are passed to an output layer for formation into a final query result which is sent out by the results pipe.

To make a connection between a user application and a data source fault tolerant, a user may use a wrapper generator to create an API wrapper that retries request that may have failed due to a service disruption. A bitmask array is implemented as a two dimensional bit array where each bit represents an allocated/free cell of the heap. Groups of bits of the bitmask array are assigned to implement commonly sized memory cell allocation requests. The heap manager keeps track of allocations by keeping separate lists of which groups are being used to implement commonly sized memory cell allocations requests by maintaining linked lists according to the number of cells allocated per request. Each list contains a list of the bit groups that have been used to provide allocations for particularly sized requests. By maintaining lists based on allocation size, the heap manager is able to cause new allocation requests to be matched up with previously retired allocations of the same size. Memory may be dynamically allocated between lists of differently sized memory requests.

Technologies are described herein for controlling the selection of drivers in a firmware environment for managing a hardware device based on a user preference. A user preference that specifies one driver being preferred over another driver for the hardware device is received, for example, through a user interface provided by the firmware environment. According to the user preference, a sorted driver pool that contain drivers available for the hardware device is created by listing the preferred driver before the non-preferred driver in the sorted driver pool. A driver stack is then built from the sorted driver pool by examining each driver in the sorted driver pool in the order they are listed in the sorted driver pool. The preferred driver is then put into the driver stack before the non-preferred driver and thus is associated with the hardware device first.

Optimum performance in an earth moving machine, such as a track-type tractor, is a function of many complex factors such as power delivered to the tracks, load, soil type, soil conditions, speed, terrain, etc. To determine an operating point associated with optimum performance, operational data may be collected, processed, and applied to known performance curves for well characterized conditions to develop recommended operating conditions. A coefficient of traction and a shear modulus adjustment, reflecting surface conditions, are calculated at the tractor during operation and used to offset a table of ideal condition operating points for use in soil characterizations. Using this and other inputs, a cycle power equation gives a curve that peaks at a theoretical optimum performance. However, the number of variables make an analytic solution impossible. An iterative approach determines a range of operating conditions associated with optimum performance.

An ECU determines whether or not there is an abnormality (shift pattern abnormality) in a combination of shift signals provided from a shift position sensor. After occurrence of the shift pattern abnormality is determined, the ECU determines whether or not a first condition that a shift pattern changes into a normal pattern of a drive range is satisfied, and whether or not a second condition that a vehicle is running (a driver has an intention to cause the vehicle to run) is satisfied. When occurrence of the shift pattern abnormality is determined, the ECU stops generation of driving force of the vehicle and prohibits switching to the drive range. When the above-mentioned first condition and second condition are satisfied after occurrence of the shift pattern abnormality is determined, the ECU switches the shift range to the drive range indicated by the shift pattern and recovers the driving force.

An inflatable cushion for a side of a vehicle is provided, the inflatable cushion having a first portion of material; a second portion of material, the first portion of material being secured to the second portion of material to define the inflatable cushion; wherein at least a portion of a peripheral edge of the inflatable cushion is defined by a seam wherein an inner surface of the first portion is secured to an inner surface of the second portion only by a plurality of stitches; and wherein a strip of a third portion of material is applied to the seam of an outer surface of either the first portion or the second portion when the plurality of stitches are applied.

In the bundle of long thin carbon structures of the present invention, end parts of the bundle are interconnected in a carbon network. The interconnected end parts form a flat surface. By this, an electrical connection structure with low resistance and/or a thermal connection structure with high thermal conductivity are obtained. The bundle of long thin carbon structures can be used suitably as a via, heat removal bump or other electronic element.

A structure and method of making a thin-film solar cell. A thin-film solar cell includes a substrate, absorber layer and a buffer layer. The absorber layer is deposited by a single-step bulk electrochemical process, or a multi-layer electrochemical process. The buffer layer is deposited by an electrochemical deposition process such as a multi-layer deposition or an atomic layer deposition. The absorber and buffer layers are non-toxic materials which can include sulfur incorporated during the deposition process or incorporated after deposition by an anneal step.
