To reduce degradation, by the LID effect, of the conversion efficiency of photovoltaic cells made of crystalline silicon, one or more steps of controlled introduction of voids into the silicon are carried out by one or more steps chosen from among: siliciding, nitriding, ion implantation, laser irradiation, mechanical bending stress applied on one face of the silicon substrate, in combination with a temperature promoting the formation of voids in the substrate. These voids make it possible to reduce the level of interstitial oxygen by an effect of diffusion of VO complexes and precipitation of oxygen. The introduction of voids has the other effect of reducing the level of autointerstitials, and therefore of limiting the formation of interstitial boron. The phenomena of LID by activation of BiOi2 complexes are thus limited. This applies notably to photovoltaic cells based on monocrystalline or polycrystalline silicon having a high concentration of boron and oxygen.

When an IGBT has a barrier layer 10 that separates an upper body region 8a from a lower body region 8b, conductivity modulation is enhanced and on-resistance decreases. When the IGBT also has a Schottky contact region 6 that extends to reach the barrier layer 10, a diode structure can be obtained. Latency on different devices (e.g., devices of differing brand, model, vintage, etc.) can vary significantly and tens of milliseconds can affect human perception of lagging and leading components of a performance. As a result, use of a uniform latency estimate across a wide variety of devices is unlikely to provide good results, and hand-estimating round-trip latency across a wide variety of devices is costly and would constantly need to be updated for new devices. Instead, a system has been developed for automatically estimating latency through audio subsystems using feedback recording and analysis of recorded audio.

Responding to relational database queries (for example, SQL queries) in a new way. More specifically, qualifying queries are written (for example, written by a human individual) in a way so that a join operation precedes a row limiting operation. Notwithstanding the fact that the join operation precedes the row limiting operation, when responding to the query, machine logic (for example, software) performs the row limiting operation before the join operation. This can improve time and processing efficiency.

A subsystem is configured to apply an offset voltage to a test, or canary, SRAM write driver circuit to create a condition that induces failure of the write operation. The offset voltage is incrementally increased until failure of the test write operation occurs in the canary SRAM circuit. The subsystem then calculates a probability of failure for the actual, non-test SRAM write operation, which is performed by an equivalent driver circuit with zero offset. The subsystem then compares the result to a benchmark acceptable probability figure. If the calculated probability of failure is greater than the benchmark acceptable probability figure, corrective action is initiated. In this manner, actual failures of SRAM write operations are anticipated, and corrective action reduces their occurrence and their impact on system performance.

A timestamp is generated that guarantees a monotonically increasing counter, even upon a crash of a virtual machine. Any virtual disk has a “hybrid cloud aware” policy in which one replica of the virtual disk is stored in a public cloud.

A system and method enables efficient implementation of snapshots of data organized as arbitrary data structures on a byte-addressable persistent memory of a host computer. A user-level library of the host computer may configure the persistent memory as a software transactional memory (STM) system defined by operations, such as a STM commit operation, that ensure safe and consistent storage of the data (i.e., the data structures) within a region of the persistent memory. The library may then cooperate with an application executing on the host computer to control access to a data structure, e.g., to change a datum, stored in the region of the persistent memory as a transaction using the STM commit operation. Within a context of the transaction, the library may precisely determine which byte or bytes of the datum have changed within the region, as well as how and when the bytes have changed. Armed with precise knowledge of the context of the transaction, the library may efficiently implement a snapshot (i.e., point-in-time copy) of the changed datum and its associated data structure at the granularity at which it was modified, e.g., at the byte-addressable granularity.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) represent a novel class of genes that function as negative regulators of gene expression and have recently been implicated in several cancers. However, aberrant miRNA expression and its clinicopathological significance in human ovarian cancer have not been well documented. Numerous miRNAs are shown altered in human ovarian cancer, significantly miR-214, -199a*, -200a, -100, -125b, -30d, -221, -222, -126, and -24. Four miRNAs (miR-221, miR-222, miR-126, and miR-24) were found to be deregulated in all four histological types of ovarian carcinoma (serous, mucinous, endometrioid, and clear cell). Frequent deregulation of miR-214, -199a*, -200a and -100 was demonstrated in ovarian cancers. Significantly, miR-214 induces cell survival and cisplatin resistance through targeting down-regulation of proteins activating the Akt pathway. Inhibition of Akt using Akt inhibitor, API-2/triciribine, or PTEN cDNA lacking 3′UTR largely abrogates miR-214 induced cell survival. These findings indicate that deregulation of miRNAs is a recurrent event in human ovarian cancer and that miR-214 induces cell survival and cisplatin resistance primarily through targeting the PTEN/Akt pathway.

The safety and proper performance of jet aircraft engines requires that any contamination of jet fuel, for example by water or by improper contaminants, be filtered (removed) before delivery of the fuel, through hoses, to the fuel tanks of the aircraft. Coalescing devices and filters in the fuel delivery system are used to attain this result. A typical problem is that filter materials chemically react with surfactants, and this causes the filter subsequently to “disarm” or fail to perform its function of removing water, which can lead to delivery of fuel containing excessive water. A solution to this problem is to pre-test the fuel for such surfactants by feeding a small fuel sample that has been mixed with “challenge water” through a smaller ‘representative’ test filter and monitor the performance. Using a fluorescent dye in the “challenge water,” the amount of water that passes the test filter is detected, compared with a baseline data and fuel quality determination is made. From the result of the small-scale test, the fuel condition can be inferred and, based thereon; action can be taken to treat the fuel, prior to further distribution, such that it will not disarm field filter-coalescers in a typical fuel distribution system. The use of a fluorescent dye enhances the ability to make this determination of very small representative fuel filters. The fuel evaluation process is fully automated, thereby avoiding human-factor variables and assuring repeatable results.

Apparatus for absorbing shock, particularly repetitive shocks, comprises a frame and a shock-absorbing component comprising a shape memory alloy (SMA). In one type of apparatus, one or more SMA rings (65) are mounted on brackets (64) on a frame (62, 63) so that shock received by the frame from one direction changes the shape of the rings into ellipses with major chords in a first direction, and shock received by the frame from the opposite direction changes the shape of the rings into ellipses with major chords in a second direction which is at right angles to the first direction. In other types of apparatus, SMA shock-absorbing components (16, 27, 37, 46, 89) are mounted in a frame (11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 17; 21, 22, 24, 25, 26; 31, 32, 34, 35; 41, 42, 43, 44, 45, 47) so that the way in which the shock-absorbing component is deformed is independent of the direction of the shock received by the frame. The shock-absorbing components preferably include a superelastic SMA, optionally in combination with a martensitic SMA. The apparatus is useful for a wide variety of purposes, including the protection from shock of medical devices, electronic assemblies, vehicles, bridges and buildings.
